2 snowbirds need to golf!!

my buddy and i are thinking about coming down to the charlotte/ statesville,north carolina area for a weekend golf trip from ohio. does anyone have any golf or hotel info for us? also restaurant or night life info also? thanks!!!

I'm not sure there are any good courses in Statesville. You may as well drive the extra 35 minutes to Charlotte. There is a lack of good public courses in this part of North Carolina though.

there are lots of good public courses in the Charlotte area

 

if you are coming down I-77 you may want to play Birkdale. it is a really nice daily fee course.

 

as far as coming into Charlotte, you will want to stay in the Ballantyne area, there is the Ballantyne Resort, they have an upscale hotel and a pretty nice course.

 

Regent Park is a little south of there, Springfield is very close to Regent, too.

 

Rocky River is up by Concord and Lowe's Motor Speedway.

Over towards Winston-Salem (if you're not stuck on Charlotte) in Clemmons is Tanglewood where the Senior Vantage Open was played for years. Good course.

if you are referring to Piper Glen, it is private. Not hard to get on to if you know a member.

 

Verdict Ridge is a nice golf course, but probably pretty soft this time of year. It has been very cold and rainy the last few weeks.

 

Rocky River is solid.

Probably your cheapest golf will be in the WS/Gboro/HiPt area. There is Tanglewood, Oak Valley, Salem Glen in western WS. All nice places. Even cheaper but not as good Pudding Ridge and Lake Louise in Mocksville area. If coming down I77 stop in Elkin a Cedarbrook. Overseeded and very nice plus reasonable.

Between Gboro and WS is Meadowlands, which is my favorite. Again about 45 bucks max. In Gboro you have Grandover with two first class tracks and Bryan Park, a public facility with 36 excellent holes. You also have Greensboro National which is well worth a look. High Point has Oak Hollow, a Pete Dye course on a lake. Don't know how good of shape it is, though. Greensboro has night life, but not like Charlotte. Triad area has plenty of good places to eat.

Last thing of note, historically Tanglewood was the no. 1 spot for Ohio people. Lot used to be full of Ohio plates.

Can't go wrong in this area. I would say Charlotte is higher priced and not as many options. Weather lately has been cold, though.

yea but your cold is our heatwave...hahaha. lookin at 10 day for the area down there and it says 60 next saturday! sounds good to me...hahaha. we have been below freezing for weeks......single digits at night! i have cabin fever bad! as long as it is above 45 i will play!!

Waterford Country Club is a Hale Irwin design and is always in very good condition. Also Highland Creek, The Divide and The Tradition are very good courses. You wont have to dip into your kids college fund to play them either. As for the night life, that is far behind since children for me but "The Forum" is awesome.

I'll 2nd Oak Valley...another nice course. In fact, a Tanglewood/Oak Valley combo would be 2 great days of golf if the courses are in good shape.

If you have time and want to play a Champions tour course that will test your skills go to Rock Barn Golf Club in Conover, about 45 minutes NW of Charlotte, 20 min. West of Statesville right on I-40. RTJ Jr design. Great facility.
