Big Announcement?

Apparently the Masters, R&A, & USGA will be making a big announcement on ESPN3 this morning 9am.

Can't imagine its anything big as I haven't heard any rumblings. Thoughts?

They're going to make the hole 15 inches and end at #12.


My initial guess would be Pace of Play guidelines/enforcement.

"Augusta National, the U.S. Golf Association and Royal & Ancient announced on Wednesday in Buenos Aires, Argentina, the creation of the Latin America Amateur Championship which will be played next January and, like the Asian Pacific Amateur, offer an exemption into the 2015 Masters for the champion.

Along with the Masters exemption, the champion of the event, which will be played at Pilar Golf in Argentina Jan. 15-18, will be exempted into the final stages of U.S. Open and Open Championship qualifying and earn spots in the Amateur Championship and U.S. Amateur. The runner-up will also be offered exemptions into the final stage of qualifying for the U.S. Open and Open Championship.

The move is an effort by golf’s three most influential organizations to grow the game in Latin America, Mexico and the Caribbean and capitalize on golf’s inclusion into the 2016 Olympic Games which will be played in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

The Latin America Amateur Championship will be modeled after the Asian Pacific Amateur, which was created in 2009 and produced one of last year’s most inspiring stories when Chinese teenager Guan Tianlang made the cut at the Masters.

....the Latin America Amateur will be largely funded by corporate sponsors but he did not rule out the possibility that Augusta National could lend financial support if needed."

I am happy for the individual who gets to go, but this is about money and appealing to a growing market. If not for that, no invitation would otherwise have been given.

might as well get in now to have a bit of influence as to how the game in that region is to be shaped....once the olympics are here and finished, that will be a hot market

Pretty cool chance for a lucky Am. Hard to beat an invite to the masters but the opportunities available should an aspiring am wanna turn pro are huge with the exemptions that would come from this.

He seems to be on a high and mighty kick this morning I believe after posting a very similiar statement about Taylormade trying to make money by making non-conforming clubs... Everything is about the money, and a business that is in the golf business is still a business. Businesses are about making money, always have been and always will be.

I think this is great for the global golf scene. Why not get exposure for LAtin America into the biggest showcase of golf in The Masters, the US Open, and the US Amateurs? Makes perfect sense to me.

But there was Billy Payne sitting right up there with the guardians of the game of golf and he really stole show when he announced that the winner gets an exemption into the Masters. R&A and USGA are still gonna make the winner of the Latin American Amateur go to final qualifying for the Open and US Open.....but Augusta goes ahead and issues the invite.
