Light Carry Bag vs Push Cart

Recommended Posts

I'm looking to lessen my load when I golf. I have a cart bag which I use with a cart. Both are very nice, but if I can take 1 less big piece of equipment to golf, I'm all for it. My bag is down to 10 clubs, so I don't need a full cart bag anyway.

Would a lightweight carry bag with ten clubs be a total piece of cake vs a push cart bag with 14 clubs and probably more stuff than I really need?

I am small so I found a really light bag, the Callaway Hyperlight, and a really light push cart, the Ti Lite.  My car has plenty of storage space to hold this push cart.

It was on sale at a really great price, so I picked up a Sun Mountain 2.5+ to replace my Olimar Sunday bag.  Weights a pound more, but has much more storage space!

I've only used the Sun Mountain for trips to the chipping range, as I've been learning to play with a lot of different wedges to get out of difficult lies.

The Hyperlight has detachable straps, unlike the sewn in straps of the Sun Mountain.

I have both types.

I have a SM 2.5+ carry bag and a cart bag with clicgear 3.5+ outfitted with an alphard clubooster electric caddy.

These days playing after work and rushing out to the course I have been more akin to just carry as it is easy to just grab my bag and go and same when finishing. It is also a bit liberating able to go anywhere on the course and not having to park my cart or maneuver it through a narrow space.

Only times I do wish I had the electric cart is climbing hill or waiting around lol.

Personally, I'd go with a super lightweight stand bag or even a sunday style bag considering you only carry 10 clubs.

It's much easer to maneuver when carrying compared to using a push cart. Plus, if your course has a lot of elevation changes using a pushcart can get pretty tiring.

I think you're right.

I don't think it necessarily needs to be a Sunday style bag that is better than a pushcart.  How well a bag sits on your back, how easy it is to lift up and set down, also play a big part in the decision.

That said, I definitely agree one can easily lighten the load with the right carry option vs. push cart. You can more easily traverse difficult terrain and take shortcuts on the green etc. rather than having to walk all the way around them.

If one is going for a cart, I would recommend a fully remote cart if possible. Otherwise, I'd always carry when able vs. pushing my clicgear.

I'm almost 64, am in decent shape, and walk pretty much 100% of the time.  My bag is 9 clubs.  I have a light carry bag, a relatively small cart bag, a lightweight pull cart, and an electric cart.  I bought the light carry bag because carrying is really the most convenient way to go and I figured I'd carry more when I pared my set down. Turns out even with a minimalist setup, carrying would annoy my back.  So I started to mostly use the cart bag with the light pull cart or electric cart depending on the heat and terrain.  The electric is the most annoying with regard to having to load it up in the car then set it up at the course, so I typically used the lighter pull cart most.

And then I saw a commercial for a bag that has the wheels attached that you pull like a suitcase (there are a couple brands.  Mine is by Revolve), and that's what I use most often now.  The wheels are detachable so you can carry if you want to, but even with the wheels on it's as convenient as a carry bag with regard to loading it in the car and takes nothing to set up at the course (all you do is extend the handle).   So if you want the convenience of a carry bag that you don't have to carry, I'd take a look at that.

I do both.  I walk about 150 rounds a year.  Ride only on venues that require it.  I am in Florida and Summer can be pretty hot and humid.  I am old and fat, (64 and weigh about 265), so staying hydrated and cool is important.  This requires that I use a push cart with an umbrella in the June - Sep time Frame.  The rest of the year I carry, currently with a Ping Craz-E light.  13 or 14 clubs, 6 balls, towel & range finder and I am good.  Light and easy to carry.  If I did not need the umbrella in the summer sun, I would carry then also.  Keep in mind although it is hot here, courses are not very hilly, so walking is not a strenuous endeavor.

If you aren’t carrying 14 clubs, I’d go with a light Sunday bag. Some great options out there, including some from the big brands.  If I had my pick, this is what I would go with:

prob not the lightest, but so damn nice!

I had a cup of coffee with a remote cart. It was literally the worst. The battery was huge. It never went the speed I wanted to. I couldn't have a conversation using it. I hated it.

My mgi zip x1 electric cart is non-remote and essentially works just like a regular push cart without the pushing, so no issues with conversing while walking with it.  Battery is smaller than a milk carton and cart folds up relatively small.  Great for hot days and hilly courses.

Early in hand photos of the new GT2 models t the truck.  As soon as they show up on the range in player's bags we'll get some better from the top photos and hopefully some comparison photos against the last model.
