Kiawah Island Trip Recommendations

Recommended Posts

Will be down in Charleston for a wedding in late October. Going to take an opportunity to sneak in a couple of rounds and enjoy Kiawah island with the lady. The Ocean course and either Osprey or Cougar. Questions for folks who have been:

1) Can I get two of these courses in in one day?

2) Can my girlfriend walk the Ocean Course with me (and the caddie)?

3) What are we thinking in terms of price should I do one of the stay and plays? They won't let you price 1 golfer out online, and I'd like to have an idea prior to calling.

4) It looks like there's plenty to do besides golf - any recommendations as to food/etc.?

Thanks in advance!

You can search around here for recommendations on Kiawah. You shouldn't have any issues playing 36, but you'll need an early tee time at one of the courses. They are about 10 minutes apart. I have not played Cougar in a while (it's been renovated), but I always liked Osprey. Either is fine.

Walking with the girlfriend is probably fine. I've heard of others doing this. It's a nice walk, actually. Just call them for rates. October is a right on the bubble for them. It's golf season versus family vacation season.

Sounds like you've never been to Kiawah, but just understand that it's "out there" a little bit. First off, it's 20-30 minutes from Charleston to the front gate, and then it's a big island. It could take another 10-15 minutes to your house, but the Sanctuary is closer to the entrance and easy access. Kiawah is pretty quiet and tame. Not much there, but beaches and a few restaurants. Charleston is awesome, but DUI distance.

Have fun. Expect some tough conditions in October. It'll probably be blowing pretty hard at the Ocean Course that time of year.

If looking to save money, try to take advantage or replay rates. Personally, I love Cougar Point, but you will likely get a majority to promote Osprey on here. Osprey is a great course as well, not sure when it opens as it currently is closed. I would also call to see what type of package they can put together for you instead of rack rates. You might end up getting a place to stay for free when you add it all up. Pretty reasonable on the island.

As the previous poster suggested, Kiawah is very laid back. Don't expect nightlife (charleston can provide that). It's a place to get away from everything. The one food tip I would give is to get the chicken and waffles at the place near Cougar Point (can't recall the name of it). Amazing if you dig chicken and waffles.

I'm actually down in Kiawah currently. Played Oak Point on Monday and Turtle Point today. Playing Ocean Course tomorrow and then Cougar Point on Saturday. Oak runs ya about $95 and is a little quirky. Definitely a place you need to play a few times to get accustomed to. Turtle was $150 and was in awesome shape. Greens were pure and besides it being insanely hot it was in great shape.

October will be peak season for golf rates, Ocean is $365 by itself rack rate, 10% less if resort guest. Replay rate is $175. Walking with girlfriends and/or wives is not at all uncommon. Osprey is currently closed for renovations and will reopen early Oct. can't say with any confidence what conditions will be like those first bunch of months. There will be an overseed so that may help.

Turtle Point is a more challenging test of golf than Cougar Point, but both will be in great shape. Both are fun but Cougar is less stressful. If you are doing two in one day you are likely to be hitting more than enough tough shots at Ocean, why not have fun with it?

Coming from Charleston you have to account for 40 min drive time to Cougar Point and a whole hour for Ocean, Turtle is would be 45, Oak would be 35. That's accounting for an early morning drive time assuming an early tee time. With slightly less daylight available to you, get the first course you plays first tee time and get lunch on the way to the second. Round times only get slower throughout the day at Ocean, very rarely faster. Believe me.
