Budget shafts...which one for Raylor 19*? Aldila One, Aldila HM 40 Tour Gold, GD Purple Ice, or Accu

I know I'm clogging the board today, but with a long weekend coming up, I have some time to tinker with clubs, so...

Experimenting with my old Retro Raylor 19* and have found the following shafts VERY CHEAP:

Aldila One (85 in either Low or Mid Launch version)

Aldila HM 40 Tour Gold (either the 80T which is an 88 gram low launch -OR- regular 97 gram low-mid launch version)

Accuflex v2 FH

Graphite Design Purple Ice 85

Whatever I choose will be in X Flex, and butt trimmed to play between a hybrid and 5wd length (probably 41").

Anyone have any feelings towards any of the 4?

I've searched and there isn't much info/opinions on any of them to be found...

Thanks again guys!

The Aldila HM 40 was the shaft that you would find in a lot of the original Taylor Mades. The 150cc models from back in the mid to late 80's. I bought 2 or 3 with that kind of x flex shaft in it.

Yeah, the reason I listed it was because I had the HM40 Tour Gold Stiff Flex in the Retro Spoon and Raylor 16 and 19 a while back. I always hit it well, but as my game and swing matured, the shafts became too weak. I'm really considering the same shaft with the x flex because of that!

Nix the PI, you would have to tip it just right to get this heavy head to behave. The HM 40 is a real good choice, STABLE. The FH will require VERY careful tipping to keep from throwing the ball way up in the air, again because of the dynamics of the head. I like both the PI and the FH, but not for this head. I would strongly suggest looking at a Fuji Vista Pro 80 or 90. That shaft is a real good match for this small heavy head and will perform well for the ways most of us use this club. I have used this club for quite a while and currently have one with a heavily-tipped Fuji 869 speeder. Good luck, it is a great head.

  • 2 weeks later...

for future reference of anyone researching the forum looking for shaft possibilities on the Raylor, I found THE PERFECT ONE (for me anyway).

I experimented with the Prolaunch Red (just plain out didn't like it in this head...too light I believe), the Accuflex Icon FH X Flex (tipped it per instruction...way too whippy and high ballflight), and then found the one:

Graphite Design put out a tour issue only YS-9 (per Dana Albert at Graphite Design Intl.: "Specs: Butt: .600", Parallel Tip: 3.5", Torque: 2.7, Kick: MID, Weight: 95 Grams...Keep in mind, this is not the same thing as 9.1 or 9.1+. This is stiffer and heavier with lower torque.")...I got the tour issue version in SX flex, tipped it 1.25" as per Dana, then butt cut it to play at 42" and it has worked out great for me.

Hm-40 was a great shaft.

Add me to the list of people who played one in an old taylor made driver years back.

I agree. I still have one in the closet. I remember loving that thing. ;)

The HM40 was/is a great shaft. I ordered 6 of them from Alidlacloseouts on eBay a couple months back for CHEAP. I definitely wouldn't be surprised to see myself game one in a fairway wood again at some point!

Along the lines of this question, anyone have any thoughts on a decent "budget" shaft for a driver that is fairly low spin, low launch. I realize the answer may be none, but thought I'd ask. I've got a great driver head that I'd like to experiment with a low launch, low spin shaft.

I've seen the Aldila One low launch available through ebay and aldilacloseouts for the price of a lunch, any others?

Depends on what you're calling budget...

Less than $20? If so, I'd go with either the Aldila One Low Launch or try and HM-40 (both offered through aldilacloseouts)
Less than $40? If so, I'd go to golfshaftsdepot.com and look into the YS-9 (a stiffer and heavier YS series shaft that was Tour Issue)
Less than $65? I'd go with the Prolaunch Red...

That's a few anyway...

Good move there.

I think the HM-40 is a similar animal to the old TT EI70 and the Taylor Made Flex Twist - it still rates as a good shaft now - even with all the advances in technology in recent years.

I won't ask anything about that toe/roof mark... ;)

that sure is still a pretty shaft when paired up with a nice, shiny black and clear coated head ;)

it not that bad really just need a polish, was touch and go for a second after the lunge at the ball!! ;) we all make bad swings at the ball now and again?, the shaft plays top class and is up there with the other newer shafts of today i have added a new pic of the club head after i have polished it up, i think i nearly got all the marks out! ,ill have another go tomorrow morning before i go and try it out on the course, the head and shaft combo does look awesome though ;)
