Late 70's Wilson Woods

Recommended Posts

I have been looking for this info everywhere and just can't seem to find anything on it. I am looking for a Wilson 1,3 and 4 wood from 1978-1980 era to go with my Staff Tour Blades. These are all the kinds I have seen on ebay:

Staff Pers Tour Block

Staff Tour Block

Staff II Tour Block

Staff II 4300

Staff II 4250

Does anyone know which model Wilson was selling in '78-'80?

This is an example of the 1978-80 Staff Laminated Wood.

The 1976-1977 model is very similar, but has a molded plastic cover that covered the whipping thread. The 1978-80 model has exposed whipping. The 1976-77 model does NOT say Tour Block on the soleplate.

The 1981-84 Staff Laminated Wood has an insert that has 4 screws in a diamond pattern.

I believe there is also a persimmon driver from 1978-80 that was finished in a brownish color Wilson called "cognac." It also had the wide red screwless insert. As far as I can remember, no persimmon fairways were offered at that time.

During this era were they all labeled as Staff II's? Also is this a correct driver:

or this one

Thanks, really appreciate the help.

The laminated driver is from 1978-1979. I originally thought that the woods with the four screw insert didn't come along until 1981, which was the year Wilson introduced the FG-17 Staff irons, but further research indicates that those woods were introduced in 1980, which was the last year for the Tour Blade irons without the FG-17 designation. So if you prefer those they would be an appropriate match as well.

The persimmon driver is from 1980-1983, so yes it would be an appropriate match for the 1978-80 irons. A similar driver with no screws in the insert was produced from 1978-1979.

The Model 11 designation was used by Wilson from the early 1960s through the mid 1980s. At various times, there were also Model 13s and Model 41s, among others, but I don't think there were any of those from 1978-1980.

If you're interested in collecting Wilson, you might want to pick up one of these. It's an excellent resource.

All great clubs. I just put a driver and 3 wood Tour Block in the bag. Amazingly, once I slowed my swing down, I hit them just about as far as any modern piece of marketing garbage out there. I was at the 259 yard sprinkler and hit the 3 wood into a greenside trap. Same distance I woulda had with my Callaway Razrx 3 wood. Same distance! Amazing feel, much better than a modern club. I was the laughing stock of the three guys I was paired up with, didn't know them. By the end of the match that they were quick to put together, my 2 opponents were handing cash over to me. I'm an 8 hcp and shot +1 on the back 9.

I can't say for sure whether there was a persimmon driver offered when the '78 - '80 Tour Blades were being offered, but I do know that a pal of mine growing up had a set of those irons plus 1, 3 and 4 of the Tour Block laminates as per your first link.

I borrowed the 4 wood for a while - and it was an ultra-reliable safety-first tee club for me and easy to hit off the deck. Was sad to give it back. The owner continued to play the 3 wood long, long after he'd moved over to a metal driver - said he couldn't find anything modern that he could hit as well, and I'd tend to agree.

A set of those would be probably the first set of laminates I'd be interested in acquiring at some point in the future, as I remember the driver being a great club also - and I don't even have the irons to match them up to. Just great clubs in their own right, IMO.

Isn't it funny?

Pay hundreds of dollars or more, swing a super-light and giant head as fast as you can, hope you land in a playable spot.

Or, pay less than your monthly internet bill, swing a small, heavy head within your comfort, and land where you want.

Same distance. Mass x Acceleration = Force. Who cares about velocity?
