Callaway prototype irons hosel stampings, help me clarify this....

Hi guys,

I have a question about the stampings on the hosel of my callaway prototype irons.

There's a .R. (I don't know what that means...)

There's a kind of v (I think it stands for the V conforming grooves)

There's a H (stands for heavy heads ?)

Do those stampings indicate tour issued irons for sure ?

Thanks for your answers.

Arnaud.

.R. in black means standard lie.

R. in gold means 1 deg flat

R.. in some other color means 2 degs flat.

.R in green (I think) means 1 deg upright.

..R in some other color means 2 degs upright.

Etc.

There's a ..R.. also called "quad dot" that means it was a another, possibly Tour issue version with heavier head and different bounce or sole grind.

As posted above, the V is to signify V or conforming grooves.

Thanks for your answer...
So assuming these irons are callaway prototype and not RAZR MB, these are surely tour issued ?
X-Prototypes were available retail, about 1500 sets or so. However, I think the conforming grooved version was rare, but still available through Callaway reps, so I wouldn't say they are necessarily Tour issued either.

Did yours come with the original shafts? The Tour issued ones have ID bands just below the grips with a series of numbers.

Do you have a serial number on the 8-iron?

I have the exact same markings on my set and there is not a serial number on the 8-iron.

I am am expert on these and know exactly what each stamping for these clubs means. (and there's a lot) All of my information is direct from a Callaway rep who handles their tour issue irons and if you look around, this info has been confirmed by mods such as easyyy.
Your set is stamped .R. V H, correct? All in black paintfill? (If not please say)
If so, this signifies standard lie and bounce, conforming grooves and heavy heads.
If there is the id band and there is no serial # on the eight iron then they are tour issue as well.
Post pics of the hosel of the 8iron as well as its face and I can be 100% sure.
If you cannot post pictures,
tell me the color of the paintfill and how many grooves are on the eight iron.

No 8i serial # means it is out of the tour department, particularly if they are heavy heads. These were almost never sold. If they needed weight in retail sets they just used tip weights.

The "V" heads were available retail but there were not many. Most people wanted the old grooves. There is no difference in the retail and tour "V" heads.

lukesmurf,

Just curious; I have a "quad dot" set with NON-conforming grooves, which DO have a serial number on the 8-iron.

What, exactly, are they?

Thanks.

What color is the paintfill? If it is black, you have high bounce standard weight, lie, grooves, retail heads.

Any idea how many lefty sets we're made?
certainly not as many and fewer in the ones that have special options like different headweights, grooves, bounces and lies. I do not know the exact number however if you have a lefty set that has any of the special features, (also nearly guaranteed to be tour issue) they can be worth noticeably more than the stock rh ones.
