Cashmere Sweaters

Many people cite a cashmere sweater as one the best articles of golf clothing they own. What are some good brands? Are there are special things to look for?

 

Any cashmere aficionados out there?

I have had quite a few cashmere sweaters over the years, some have been qute pricey...then I found some great ones for $60.00 at Marshalls and TJ Maxx! Nice merino ones for $20.00 too! No fancy names or special brands, but nice and soft, solid colors, warm...just as good as some of the $200.00 ones I have had. Don't feel too bad about getting them a little dirty either! :)

I'd be afraid to get those things dirty.

The golf courses that I play at, it's always wet (and I mean WET), so my pants, shoes and socks always end up being a mess, with my jacket, glove and maybe (sometimes) the shirts end up with dirt also. It's just not worth it to "dress to impress" where I play at.

Most cashmere sold in USA stores is junk made in China, it pills up pretty quick , loses its shape, and looks terrible. Prices range from about $50 to $150.

Then there are some Scotland made cashmere sweaters, which are hit or miss, some decent quality, some bad.

The really good quality cashmere is made in England and will be minimum of $400. The made in England cashmere never pills and holds its shape forever.

over here in scotland, almost every golfer owns at least 1 of these. Very good for our cold days.

 

The main brand over here is lyle and scott. They last for ages.

LOL, wow. I have several cashmere sweaters (advantages to working for a retail company), but my go to golf sweater is a 20+ year old Burberry. Its camel colored, v neck, and just roomy enough for a turtleneck underneath. It looks better than a couple of my other sweaters that are maybe 2 years old. I never thought anything of it. Thank you for bringing that to my attention.

While the cost of some of the cashmere sweaters are getting cheaper and cheaper, just be aware that these sweaters are generally from the older fur off of a cashmere goat. And the older fur tends to be thicker and coarser than the younger. Cashmere fur also tends to be quite short, not a good scenario fro golfers as the area undeer the armpits may get worn out prematurely. And, by the way, most of the cashmere goats are in China, more specifically Mongolia, and "Made in China" is not a great indication of the overall quality of the cashmere.
