Driving distance

Here's the deal guys, today i shot an 80, not great by most people's standards, but not bad for me. Anyways, the 8 strokes that I lost came either on the tee box or on the green. I lost 6 on the green and two on the tee box. That solves everything, work on putting and your driver doesn't matter. On a lot of courses driver is not needed, I have played entire rounds with a 3i down and shot under my handicap. And when working with a driver, try to get it in the fairway. There are 14 times a round you can hit driver, and those can be the 14 most aggrivating shots if you cannot hit the ball in the fairway or light rough.

In conclusion, if you can hit the ball 220 in the fairway, then you are much better off then 300 in the woods.

well I'm 15 yrs. old and I hit it about 275 but I'm a big guy and it isn't impossible but very hard I worked with my instructor on it for awhile and worked with weighted clubs and such and I hit it far but there really is no point if you can't score my best score ever is only 72 and corey pavin hits it shorter than me and he averages lower than 72

J.B. Holmes hit more than 50% of his drives in 2008, at least 300 yrds or more (PGA stat).

And where does all that length get him?....he missed the cut at the Sony in Hawaii (3 weeks ago) and missed the cut at the FBR in Phoenix (last week)

It is possible to get up around 300 on average but not many do it. Actually only the top 15 or so on the tour. Plenty of guys hit it that far but are not real good players. If you hit it 260 on average now then 280 should not be a problem. You cant go by a measurement of a hole to get your distance off the tee. The tees could be up or back,,,,, dogleg of a hole,,, distance is measureed directly down the center of fairway in straight lines to green. Dont worry about distance practice 130 yards in and putting. Phil last week they showed a stat. 18 of 18 on putts less than 10 feet. Thats why you win. When he putts bad he is not close. The flat stick wins tournements,,, bottom line.

very true, distance is only a small part of being able to score.

And if you look at the flip side of distance (i.e., Corey Pavin), if you look at his driving distance, I find it amazing that he can even survive on tour (although he may be at his end on the PGA). In the first round of the Sony, he averaged 220 yrds on his drives (for which they take stats) and look what he does elsewhere to make up the difference....you have to give him credit for such an underdog.

Corey Pavin, 2008 stats:

Driving distance (avg) = 261, rank #197

Sand saves, rank #2

Putts per round, 27.2, rank #1

Scrambling, 64.4%, rank #3

Par-3 performance, -11, rank #1

Approaches 125-150 yards - #4

Approaches 50-125 yards - #5

Approaches 75-100 yards - #1

I think there's a multitude of factors regarding distance (i.e. conditions, weather, etc.) but regarding ss you have to factor in launch angle and spin as well. I have a 118 ss but only manage 270-285 because of crazy low launch and high spin rates.

But regarding scoring and competing, I manage because I work on accuracy off the tee and ball striking rather than ripping at it. That's what I suggest for people. Distance can only help if you have the fundamentals for everything else laid down.
