Recommend cheap irons to replace my Titty 990

Yellow Jacket

Recommended Posts

OMG, I'll finish replacing my entire bag in under 10 rounds
I regripped my 5 and 6 iron tonight and realized that I had done it quite a few times and I probably need new irons. I don't need to buy actual "new" irons - used ones are fine.

So, is there anything out there that will be cheap (I guess cheap means <$300?) that will play similar to my 990's? Don't really care about cast or forged, though cast are lower maintenance. The first ones that come to mind are the 695MB, Nike Blades and MP33.

While we're at it, anyone want mine? :)

Try Bridgestone J33 Combos or J33B's. You can get them for pretty cheap on ebay these days. J33 CB's seem to be a little bit higher priced since it's new.

The J33 just look too weird for me...I've never hit them, but if I hit them as straight as Ping Zings, that may change my mind...on the other hand, I probably won't get a chance to hit them, so for now they're in the "eh...probably not" box.

I just went back to 990's... I missed the buttery soft feel. I am getting them regripped right now. It is taking me a while to get used the adjustment of loss of yardage because of the lofts..

I feel like most of my golf shots are quality golf shots. I found that hard to find in an iron. MP60 would probally be my next set of irons... I think the feel and set up are very similar to me.

The clubs you listed aren't going to offer you anything that your current clubs don't already do. If the grooves aren't worn off the 990's, I'd say stick with them. They're a great club. (So what if I'm biased?! :) )

Are you prepared to sell yours and only get about $120 for them? We both know they're WORTH more than that, but you just aren't going to get any more for them.

Sounds like you are in need of a forged blade "intervention." ;)

If you want to try forged blades, find a set of Tommy Armour 845m Silverbacks. New sets pop up on Ebay all the time for about $230. Great clubs with some forgiveness built in. ;)

You think I'll try blades, decide they aren't any better, and end up going back to my 990's?

Titleist 735's. I believe you are a pretty good player? correct? If so, you'll like the traditional appearance, and I swear they're great irons.

Sorry if asking about your ability, no offense intended. I was in no way questioning your motivations or doubting your skill. I think people should play what they like, so please take no offense to the question.

:)

I am "pretty good" as you put it, but the only reason I've never really liked the 735 was because of that stupid "735*CM" in the middle of the cavity. It just makes them look ugly :)

Also, the 735 are a current iron line which means they'll probably be above my price range.

I had 990's previously, great set of clubs that I probably should have kept. But if you want to try something similar, but just a bit more forgiving, try the 704.cb. The profile at address is almost the same as the 990's, althought just a bit larger in the long irons. Given the forged stainless they have a similar look and durability to the 990's. And they are last years model, so you can find them for around $300.

Although all the before mentioned clubs would also be great if you wanted a different look.

I went through the exact same progression. The 990's to 704's. Both are great clubs. I am sure that you will not be disappointed.

Cheers,

Brad

It's been known to happen. :cheesy: I had a set of MP-33's that didn't last long. Wonderful clubs, but they were just too punitive for me. I think the best thing to do would be to hang on to the 990's and give the blades a go.

Granted, the 990's are cast, (but it's a soft casting,) you would THINK more people would play them still. They seem to offer everything that people are always claiming they want in irons:

Thinner topline, redcuced offset, small cavity for a little forgiveness but plenty of workability. They still hold their own. Only thing different from newer sets are their slightly weaker lofts (49º PW.)

I think if the 990's were re-released with different graphics, Titleist could sell them all over again!
