Your "Go-To" Course Strategies

As a lot of people on here have alluded to, know what you can and can’t do.

 

I have a draw that sometimes doesn’t draw. So I plan for it not drawing, and if it does it will end up being great. I never aim at a hunker and try to draw it away.

 

It’s small things in understanding your game that will help you with your strategy.

There’s something to this. I recently had a “playing lesson” with a pro as part of a lesson package. Most of it was strategy, and I had to explain what I was planning to do for each shot, and work through the Socratic process with the pro when he thought what I was going to try wasn’t all that smart. I’m a 10, shot a 77.

 

The most interesting thing is the number of pretty good shots I hit after going through the process with the pro watching, whereas in a normal round with the guys my downfall is the number of truly awful shots I hit. If I can figure out how to do the former while in the latter situation, I might drop that HCI.

Never miss a front pin short, never miss a back pin long, the best players pick the best targets. :) I try to keep it simple

It depends on the golfer skill level

If your above an 85 shooter, its all bout eliminating mistakes, penalty shots, punching out, chunks, tops , 3 putts, double chips

If you shoot between 75 and 85, its about GIRs and missing in the right spot

If you shoot below 75, hitting iron shots tight and making birdies

My home course is tight and you have to play to positions. You can be in the middle of the fairway and pretty much dead on a few holes. You have to miss in the right spot on the greens or you will need to be an amazing putter to get down in 2. This course has taught me to know my misses. My swing at this moment produces a draw, very slight pull or dead straight ball flight. I just don't miss right and my left misses at not very far offline. I pick the farthest right spot I can hit to on both fairways and greens. We have a par 5 that is impossible to be below the hole in 2 and I purposely miss the green below the hole. My weak area is new courses where I am not 100% on where to miss. When I have any indecision going on in my head it always results in a bad shot.

Look up Scott Fawcett Decade on YouTube. It is the proper way to strategize. You may need to modify it based on your handicap (he mostly deals with high level amateurs and tour players) but it will teach you why the best players in the world strategize the way they do and you can draw from that.
