INSURANCE PSA

I just wanted to give everyone a heads up about insuring your clubs for the amount they are worth. I had my bag stolen and ended up with a check for $4800! I’m devastated by that amount. Nike VR Blades built for me on the Nike Tour trailer, tour issue TM 3 and 5 wood with GD 902 PM shafts, limited release Scotty button back that I sent in and had paintfill changed and stamping done , tour issue NIKE 380cc dymo driver with a tour only RIP shaft and a prototype Adams hybrid that was never made it past R&D. Not to mention a Scotty Cameron circle T bag. I’m only listing this stuff to make a point. 99% of my bag was irreplaceable and when the insurance company evaluated it they only used retail prices to reimburse me. They took no account for tour issue or the rarity of my clubs. I’m sure the bag and putter would have brought $4800 by themselves. I don’t want this to happen to anyone else and wanted to let you know to List your clubs individually to the insurance company and put a value on them. I can’t replace my set with all the money in the world , the products just don’t exist. The graphite design 902 PM shafts by themselves are not replaceable and the putter is next to impossible to find. I’m not a crier but I cried when my daughter was born, when my mom died, on 9/11 , and when my dog died and when I lost these clubs.

Insure your clubs.

Who’s your insurer? You might just have a crappy insurer and/or crappy coverage.

It matters as all insurers aren’t the same.

Some pay. Some don’t pay.

Some pay fairly. Some don’t pay fairly.

When asked, I always tell others—don’t just look at the cost of the premiums, look at the payout history before you buy insurance.

Edit: You had rarities and you didn’t itemize them and take pictures, etc. prior to the loss? If so, shame on you.

Seems to me that although your gear was irreplaceable to you, the insurance company was reasonable. It's hard to place an accurate value on tour issue and highly customized clubs.

You're lucky you didnt have to make a claim with one of the airlines. Most wont even come close to retail value, they use depreciated PGA trade-in values so you literally get pennies on the dollar, plus they limit you to 14 clubs, a dozen balls, and your golf bag. Dont even waste your time trying to get compensated for laser rangefinder, GoreTex, shoes, etc.

Sorry to hit a guy while he’s down, but you didn’t insure your gear properly. It’s best to have rare/irreplaceable items (no matter if it’s jewelry, golf clubs, etc) insured on a personal articles policy, which is an itemized policy with an agreed upon value for each item.

Most standard policies are going to cover personal property at replacement cost (or even depreciated value depending on your insurance carrier and policy type). It’s very difficult for them to establish a replacement value on rare/irreplaceable/custom items. That’s why you need to go itemized with agreed values.

Again, not to kick a guy when he's down but to people outside of golf, tour issue means zilch. Heck to most of us here it means zilch as well. It's just a head that is spec'd a certain way that may not be "standard" for an OEM production run. Some like the 380 Dymo or the hybrid I could see being argued as "rare" items as there were literally only handfuls of those made. However, the buttonback, the VR blades, and the TM fwys were all "regular" run equipment that might have been tweaked slightly in some way, be it hot melt or a longer hosel...certainly nothing someone who doesn't obsessively follow golf would be very familar with.

Sure it sucks you lost these rare items, but shafts have made massive leaps and bounds in the last decade so take advantage of that and find something that might fit you better. You can also find a lot of tour issue Nike product on eBay, for instance, PM this guy and see if he will sell you one set of these Limited Run Nike blades (attached below) along with tour issue Adams hybrids on eBay and Golfstealsanddeals. I also believe one of the sponsors here, Will Peoples also deals in some hard to get, sometimes tour only product, so it might be a good idea to reach out there. It sucks, but hang in there, all be made better soon. I saw it happen to my dad (with just retail stuff) and he was a mess for a few works trying to sort it all out.
