Callaway Epic Forged iron struggles?

I agree with a lot of things in this post. I too had the cf 16's (fitted professionally) and I thought that the cup face produced occasional "flyers" but when I got on trackman I found that they were just poor strikes (high toe, low heel) that would drop the spin down and increase the distance. I was so used to cb's and blades where a bad strike would kill the distance and with all of the "help" the cf 16 provided I couldn't quite tell exactly where the strike was. It was an eye opening experience for me and after that I changed my 5-pw to a more "traditional" setup and went with the p790 4 iron for the "help". My typical driver ss is 115-118 for reference. I think the technology that's available in today's irons is great for a lot of people but can be a detriment for some higher swing players. Especially in the mid to long irons

Swapped my Calloway Steelheads with regular flex shafts to the new Calloway Epic Forged with stiff shafts, ( fitted by a pro.) Yes, the difference in length is surprising, but that was not my goal. An hour on the range gave me new distances for each iron, the number on the bottom of the club just feeds the ego, but the 170 yard shot is now a 7 iron shot for me and that is all that matters. I have had consistent gapping between irons but had to add a fourth wedge. My shot dispersion has been cut by 5 yards average, so less putts and lower scores. High loft ball with high loft shafts allow the ball to stop as long as I put a good swing on it and hit somewhere near the sweet spot. My new 7 hits it five feet higher and 10 yards longer than my old one, according to Trackman. No fliers yet that were not expected from how the ball was sitting in the grass. Don't try these without a swing speed over 90, they take some power to get the most out of them. More flex in the shaft ruined the dispersion pattern for me, just 10 yards farther from the pin.

You absolutely have it correct. Those flyers are mis-hits, which keep Good ball speed but kill spin. And since feel is not as clear in these types of irons, you don’t realize the miss-hit was as bad or impacting as it was. With your blades, the hands would be telling you more strongly you just missed.

this is especially true when you hit centered and a bit high on the face. You immediately see it in trackman, the ball speed stays good and the spin drops, but it doesn’t “feel” that wrong.
