Shafts: omg oem

A year and a half ago, I ordered a new set of p760. Fitted by my golfstore we came to the conclusion that Dynamic Gold S300 stiff shafts were the way to go. They arrived a couple of weeks later and I started playing enthusiastically. After some time I started to get the feeling the clubs weren't as soft as they were at the fitting. Played on for a while, but eventually couldn't take it anymore. I found a professional clubbuilder near me and went there for a fitting of my existing set.

There my shafts were measured and the found that my 7i shaft had a frequency of 344 cpm. This is the equivalent of a xxxxstiff shaft. I was mindblown.

After this that measured loft and lie. Even these were some degrees off.

They told me that all the big companies sell sets from the rack to every normal customer and that frequently people aren't getting even close what they were fitted for.

Of course I wanted to call my golfstore and let them rectify this. But given the big chance of sending my clubs back and receiving another set from the rack, not knowing if it would be to my specs this time, I took my losses.

The clubbuilder rebuilt my set with properly measured and weighted shafts and now my clubs feel awesome again.

Did anyone have the same experience?

The set was made using DG X100, instead of DG S300, and that happens, so 344 CPM for a #7 iron is NOT XXXX....but DG X 100 (that club should have been about 328-330 if this is Taper tips)

Give your club maker this chart, the one he is using is useless and all wrong. (probably a RIFLE FCM chart for use with a 2.5 clamp, thats the most common mistake and why flex seems WAY off.)

The full chart plus lots of others is to find in the link belowhttps://forums.golfwrx.com/discussion/1816864/cpm-and-flex-matching-what-chart-to-use-fcm-what-is-flex-slope

Loft, Lie and SW vales is never spot on from OEMs, they have a tolerance they never tell about, but the norm is plus minus 2* on loft and Lie and plus minus 1 on SW, so you will never see a set from OEM thats correct on specs for all clubs, but here they also picked the wrong shaft flex, and that happens too.

Aside from the general gripes about custom orders often being built to a very poor standard (which is frankly super frustrating), the shaft CPM bit doesn't really make sense. There is no way that an S300 accidentally ended up 4+ flexes too strong somehow. Do you still have the shafts?

They was not 4 flexes stronger either, but most likely DG X100 shafts.

OEMs does make mistakes, but when it comes to judgement of flex, its just as bad or worse from many club makers. Only a fragment of them educated themselves on shaft and how to judge them right, so we often see measurements with grips, or compared to Kaufmans L.A.R.S.X charts or RIFLE FCM for 2.5" clamps, but non of them can be used here.

If They was judged using Kaufmans charts, they would be S+, and if they was judged using RIFLE FCM for 2.5" clamp. they would look like FCM 9.2 with 344 CPM, so im convinced this is just X100, and that this club maker used a RIFLE FCM chart for 2.5" clamp and that would explain it all.

That means TM messed up and picked 1 flex stronger, and the club maker who judged them made it seem even worse, so both of them made mistakes here...

Ah, that makes sense, sorry your post was not there when I made mine. Good ole' compounding mistakes, hah. If that is the case then the OP did a great job of picking out that the hypothetical X100 was not playing for feeling the same as the S300 hit in the fitting. Its one thing to notice the difference side by side but another to remember days or weeks later.

EDIT: Also those Black Gold shafts are no joke. ?

If you go to YouTube, and see a few videos of club makers who measure butt CPM, they most likely only have 1 chart on the wall they use for all shaft models and think its valid, and when i see them starts to tip trim woods to make them fit to the chart....i leave the page, i cant save them all from themselves, so i dont even leave a comment. The problem here is that those who sells CPM readers dont know this or dont tell the buyer how to use it right, and shaft manufacturers hardly ever delivers specs for this, and if they do, its for uncut shafts where they dont even tell what clamp size and tip weight that was used, so this is the biggest mess of them all, and thats why we see post like the OP is posting, its errors from 2 parts combined.

EDIT:

Black Gold is using a stronger butt section to alter "Tip to butt deflection", so just like RIFLE FCM, the butt side isolated DONT tell how strong that shaft will feel, we only know the butt section when we use butt CPM only.

Just look at the Original Graffaloy BLUE...considered to be a strong and stable shaft, while the butt section isolated is SOFT and will make them to look softer than many other shafts with the same flex letter, so butt CPM is NOT a good way to judge flex between different models, it CANT be used for that, and ive done my best to explain it in the tread im linking to above here.

Thanks for the great reactions. My shafts did have the stickers of s300 on it, and also stanced in the shaft underneath the grip.

But the feeling would make more sense if they were were x100s. And oke xxxs is maybe an exaggeration.

I'm confident this club builder is an excellent one. He makes clubs for some guys on the European tour.

Thanks for the table, it's very explaining.

Oh I wasn't basing my comment on the Black Golds by just your CPM chart, I think it was quickly found out back when they were released that they played extremely stout, basically like True Temper's version of a Project X Rifle (were they intended to be competition there?). Your CPM chart just reminded me of that.

The stickers (Gold color) is not on the shafts from True Temper, but added at the factory they are put together with heads, and there is no way that the silk screen code identified this shafts as DG S300 tapers, the only possible way that could happen is that this are UDG S300 (paralells descending weight), who was tip trimmed above standard tip trim instructions, but from what i can see, P760 has a Taper tip hosel.

The chart i posted above explains this. UDG S300 tip trimmed to standard specs with "standard hosel specs" measure 336 CPM with a 5.0 clamp and correct clamping pressure, so we are only 8 CPM above when return value is 344, and we can get there by 1.0 inch tip trim above standard tip trim instructions....

DG S300 tapers has to be hard stepped more than 2x to get to 344, so thats not likely at all for a #7 iron since #9 is the shortest and strongest, and that means there is no DG S300 Tapers who can be built to that specs. They was TOO strong, thats for sure, and if they was S300, it was wrong tip trim on parallels, and if they was tapers, its DG X100

If you still have those shafts, post a photo of the silk screen code under the grip, and tell us tip length on that #7 iron. (tip to first step)
