i have tried several of the golf applications and by far golf shot is the best in my opinion. Golf logix is good but it is a serious battery hog!
I can play 18 holes and still have some battery life left using golf shot.

But think about it, you are using your phone for over 4 hours almost non stop. How can you expect it not to drain your battery?

If you were playing a game or whatever it would be the same.

When I used iPhone GPS apps (both Golfshot and Airvue) I bought a RocketFish battery extender from BestBuy for $40 (thereabouts) and had over 90% when finished leaving the GPS on for instant readings, bright screen settings and all. I only used the extended battery when I played golf then took it off because it makes the phone thicker. Pretty simple solution and still very affordable option for Golf GPS

I have used 2 that I like that are 'FREE' and had 25-50% battery left on my BB Curve.
1st is iGolf's mobile app.... iGolf.com
2nd is nRange... nRange.com

Unfortantely batterie's have not made the progress our electronics have. Whether golf gps or any other application batteries are stone age.

I have an i4 with GolfShot and get decent battery life keeping it on throughout the round. I also used to use it on a 3Gs, but the i4's battery life seems to be about 10-15% better to me.

A few days ago I played a round that took about 4 hours and 20 minutes. I startted with about 90% and ended up with around 40% left. I forgot to turn off WiFi and 3G or my remaining battery would have been better, I'd guess in the 55-60% range.

The Power Save Mode really makes a difference. For those who haven't used it, it keeps the GPS active while turning the screen off with the proximity sensor. This happens when you put the phone in your pocket, or just in a cupholder upside down since the sensor is at the top of the screen next to the phone earpiece. You then need to use the "Slide to Unlock" switch at the bottom of the screen to return to the data display. The obvious advantage to this is, you are constantly receiving and updating GPS data, while the screen, the biggest battery hog, is off.

I recently got an iPhone4 and transferred my Golflogix membership over to the new phone. I played a 4 hour 20 minute round last weekend and still had 25% battery left. I did not turn off wifi but did try the suggested Golflogix battery saving tips. I'm going to try out Golfshot next and have been contemplating getting a Mophie Air pack for my phone. Not too sure if the repeated full drains that the golf program causes will limit the long term battery life.

I went the Mophie Airpack route. Worked great for me. Plenty of battery life to get through a full round using GPS App. Great battery extender.

I think more and more I'm going to go the battery extender route as well. One quirk with turning off the power to the iPhone as suggested by Golflogix between shots was that if you did this while measuring a shot it would quit that function and wouldn't measure. It took me a couple of times to figure it out. I think with the extender the phone could just be on all the time meaning not having to wait for gps lock.

I have the 3gs with Morphie extender as well. I play Two rounds in a row without turning the GPS off as someone mentioned above and still have 30% battery left at the end. Here is the trick:

Turn off all mail from the setting specially if you have "Exchange Server"
Turn off "Push"
Turn off "Notifications"
Turn off "Wi-fi"
Turn off all location services except for Golfshot

That's it.
