Prolotherapy or Wrist Arthroscopy?

Hey all,

After a month and a half of PT to obtain very little relief from my tenosivitis (wrist tendonitis), my doctor has suggested that I go in for surgery.

I've been doing some research on alternatives to wrist arthroscopy and have found something called Prolotherapy.


"The basic mechanism of Prolotherapy is simple. A substance is injected into the affected ligaments or tendons, which leads to local inflammation. The localized inflammation triggers a wound healing cascade, resulting in the deposition of new collagen, the material that ligaments and tendons are made of. New collagen shrinks as it matures. The shrinking collagen tightens the ligament that was injected and makes it stronger. Prolotherapy has the potential of being 100 percent effective at eliminating and chronic pain due to ligament and tendon weakness, but depends upon the technique of the individual Prolotherapist. Prolotherapy is in laymens terms is letting the body heal itself.

Why am i considering this? Well, I've heard that there is a longer downtime after an arthroscope, and the process itself may cause more damage than what it's supposed to cure/investigate. My doctor seems eager to operate, but has expressed his concerns.

So, if anyone with joint/tendon/wrist/elbow problems out there can chime in with their opinions, I'd greatly appreciate it!

I had arthroscopy on my left wrist 7 years ago. I was misdiagnosed for 5 years. The surgery was a piece of cake. My problem that was initially diagnosed as a elongated ulna bone actually turned out to be a torn ligament. I do not know where you live but one of the best hand men around is Dr. Gary Poeling at Wake Forest University Medical Center and Boman Gray Hospital. I am a scratch player and putting it off without the second opinion almost ruined my gof game. The rehab was easy and I laid off for four months but later found out I could have been back in one month. Have had only occasional flareups since then. He has a web site and has done several other people in my area. The day he diagnosed me he had fourteen surgeons from around the country observing. Don't put it off. I have Systemic Lupus Erythamatosus, An auto-immune disease affecting all joints, and connective tissue. I have had both hips and both shoulders TOTALLY replaced. The down time was minimal, I was up and doing PT 16 hrs after surgery. The "easy" way is most often the "wrong" way. I would opt for surgery because it is a "sure thing". If the injections don't work, then your back at square one. Good Luck.
