The Dunes Club is the best course on the beach hands down

Shaftesbury Glen is ALWAYS in perfect shape but it's a bit out of the way

Heather Glen is pretty nice

Prestwick is a great track and just got new greens last year

And I always recommend trying to get to Cape Fear National. It's a little over an hour from the Barefoot area but it's well worth it

Dunes Club no contest. Tidewater is great. Prestwick is underrated IMO, one of my favorites. River Club down in Litchfield is another underrated course IMO, especially for how cheap ou can play. It isn't always top condition but it has some awesome holes.

Grande Dunes Resort and Members club, Thistle, Legends Heathland

Dunes Club not Grande Dunes
Tidewater
Oyster Bay (some will disagree)
Moreland is legit and while your there you might as well Parkland & Heathland too
Played Oyster Bay last Tuesday, greens were SLOW, pace was slow (5 hrs 20 mins), more than half the holes were crowned. The round included lunch which [s]lunch[/s] was terrible (Cheeseburger for me, Chicken sandwich for my lady). Bunch of nice holes though, should be fun when conditions are good. Good luck.

In he north,I like Tidewater, Glen Dornoch and Tigers Eye. In the south Caladonia is of course wonderful but I very much enjoyed Tradition and Willbrook Plantation.as cheaper options.

From North to South, these are the top 20 you haven't played. If you're trying to select 4 for your next trip, I'd say play the Dunes Club and any three of the ones that has an asterisk. Or try Founders which I think of as "True Blue lite". Here's a link to photos of these courses:http://www.flickr.com/photos/golfcoursepix/collections/72157632004669462/

Wachesaw PLANTATION is definitely a must play if you can get out there. It's a private club and has very nice bent grass greens. One of my favorites here

I played there probably 6 years ago and the course was amazing. I don't think I saw another golfer all day. Just don't get it mixed up with Wachesaw Plantation East. World of difference between the 2.

Oh man definitely don't make that mistake! Last time I played there it was a SWAMP. The greens were actually in good condition but despite not having any significant rain the fairways were muck, and the bunkers were sink holes. They are black and white as far as course conditions are concerned.

Starting to think I need to go NORTH. I haven't played anything north of Barefoot.

What do you think of this line-up based on your suggestions?

Day 1 Fly-In
Day 2 Tigers Eye & Leopards Chase
Day 3 Tidewater & Glen Dornach
Day 4 Dunes Club & Grande Dunes
Day 5 Prestwick - Fly Out
Sounds awesome but I would do Heather Glen and then Glen Dornoch as one of the days. They are across the road from each other and I believe you get a good rate playing both together.

Of course you have to play Tidewater though so not sure how you fit that in? Maybe play Tidewater of Prestwick on the last day?

That's a super line -up. Short Game's advice is good. Heather Glen is an underappreciated course in the area because it doesn't have the "wow factor " of the waterway or tidal marsh holes that some of the other courses have. However, it is a really solid and interesting golf course. If you take away the marsh views from Tidewater, Heather Glen is an equal or better course. The par 3's and the last 4 holes on the HG white 9 are really good holes.and as pointed out above, you can probably get a good deal pairing HG with its sister course, Glen Dornoch. In any event, with either TW or HG that's an excellent itinerary. Prestwick is also a good choice for your "get-away" round. I've done that several times. However, depending on how many in your group and time of your flight, you should note that they only have one or two showers in the locker room. You can only fit in so many rounds, so you'll need to play Rivers Edge next trip :-)

Sounds like a pretty solid line up and a great time to be had there! Although I never really enjoyed any of the "Big Cat" courses as much as some do... Just must have caught them at a bad time.

Last I heard dornoch wasn't in the best shape greens wise. I haven't been there in some time though even though I love it there. Maybe opt for heather glen-tidewater?

I haven't seen any negative reports about Glen Dornoch. It was in perfect condition when I played there earlier in 2013 (which means nothing now), although a few fairways were a tad soft.

Here are the latest reports I've found on the Myrtle Beach Golf Talk website trip reports page from people who have played these courses this month:

Report from MBGT on Nov 21: "Tidewater told us upon arrival that they had just over seeded and gave us a dozen Pro V’s I think because of the conditions. Believe me, the dozen balls didn’t make up for the conditions – the place was ripped up! The tee boxes, fairways and greens were some of the worst I have ever seen."

Report from MBGT on Nov 17: Heather Glen : Very nice. course conditions were great everywhere. Good customer service.

Glen Dornoch: Another great course. good conditions from tee to green. Nice stretch of holes out along the Intercostal Waterway.

Rivers Edge: The new greens are very good, nice layout of holes especially the holes out along the Shallotte River. Well worth the drive.

Tigers Eye: Conditions were excellent nice variety of holes

PS - At Golf Desk, I recommend Brian Noblin. At the Glens, I recommend Brad Crumling. They are two honest guys who will give you good advice and a good deal.

I don't think I'll go south to Pawley's Island this trip. Leaning towards these 4-
The Dunes
Tidewater
Cape Fear National
Rivers Edge

So many choices; not enough time.
