Your favorite Minnesota Metro and Western WI courses?

Recommended Posts

What are your favorite Minnesota golf courses, top 5 - top 10? I've played dozens, I suspect at least, and I think I could pick a top 5, although it would be tough. Top two are easy for me, as they are my favorite courses hands down I've ever played.

1. White Bear Yacht Club

2. Keller Golf Course

3. Clifton Highlands (Western WI)

4. Troy Burne (Western WI)

5. Medina Golf and CC

6. Highland

7. White Eagle

8. The Badlands (Western WI)

9. Sawmill (Stillwater Oaks)

10. Goodrich

A few of these I haven't played in years, but from recollection I loved them quite much when I played them. The last 5 I picked could have been filled by many as I've played so many over the years and can't remember all, but these are courses I just tend to like in general. In fairness I've played none of the Minneapolis munis, and I've heard some good things about them.

Nope. Have a funeral I'm going to in a bit here. Actually kind of ticked I didn't get out yesterday because I knew I had obligations today and knew I was going to watch the Open on Sunday with my dad.

Anyway, I went to the TPC to watch the 3M a few years back and the fairways were nicer than some of the greens we play on. What are the greens fees out there?

I've always wanted to play Stoneridge but the greens fees there are really bad.

Nice. It's definitely at the top of my list. Another I've never played that held a pro event is Bunker Hills. I think Minnesota courses that I know of that held pro events or majors would then be:

Bunker Hills
TPC
Interlachen
Hazeltine
Troy Burne
Keller

As am Minnesotan I suppose on my short list of to-dos would be to play all the courses in MN that have had pro events.

Add Minikahda and Minneapolis Golf Club to those holding Majors years ago. [s]I believe both held the PGA Championship[/s]. I may be missing some as well?

EDIT: Minneapolis held the PGA Championship while Minikahda and Hazeltine held the US Open.
Interlachen held the US Open and it was the 3rd leg of Bobby Jones Grand Slam!

Minneapolis Golf Club is the other one I played. Super cool course right next to downtown Minneapolis. I know for a fact it held the US Am years ago and some other events. I think you are right it did hold a major years ago but not sure if it was the US Open or the PGA.

And Minikahda

The USGA made its first stop to Minikahda back in 1916, as amateur Charles "Chick" Evans captured the U.S. Open. What was even more amazing, is that Evans carded a two-over-par 286 to defeat Jock Hutchison by two shots, using only seven clubs. That's right, seven wooden-shafted sticks enabled Evans to post a score that would last for 20 years. During the final round, Evans gambled at the par-five 12th, going for the green in two. It turned out to be quite successful, as he two-putted for birdie and eventually the win.

Cool! I stand corrected, it was Minikahda that had the Open and I have played, not Minneapolis CC. And the other course that I caddied at and have played was Mendakota on hwy 13 in Mendota Heights. I think what happened was I got the names mixed up because it's been so long but it's now coming back to me.

Nice!

Mendakota is just down the road from Somerset where I was an assistant in the early '80's. Dale Jones ran the bag room for us back then, and has now been the Head Pro at Mendakota for probably over 20 years? Man, where does the time go???

20 years ago is right around the time I was a caddy there. Actually I was probably a caddy there around the time I was 12yo in 93?

Yeah, man, the time is ridiculously precious and more-so when you see your 20s disappear!

  • 3 weeks later...

Hey fellas, I could use a little advice. I am visiting from Scottsdale, AZ and would love to get out for a round. I am staying in Roseville, MN with in-laws for a few days and looking for some suggestions on nearby courses. I am a lefty and will need to rent some clubs. The courses I had been looking at were Highland National, U of MN (Les Bolstad), Stone Ridge (Stillwater), Loggers Trail, etc. I would really like something close so I can easily get dropped off and picked up. Also would like to be able to rent a decent set of clubs as I am used to playing my AP2s at home.

Thanks for any help,
JR

Les Bolstad is the closest to Roseville (It's basically in Roseville). If I had a choice however I would play Stone Ridge. I've never played it but I've heard good things about it. I've played Bolstad, Loggers, and Highland. Love Highland, like Loggers, and I like Bolstad.

of the mentioned ones, I would choose Stoneridge. Likely to have good choice of rentals.
Links style, elevated greens with some bumps and runs choices.

Other that is really close would be Kellar GC.
Have not played since the renovations, but always really loved the track. Quick drive from Roseville, maybe 10 minutes.

Keller is the best! Only course I fancy more is the Yacht Club. I hope they didn't ruin the outlay with the renovation. I liked it just the way it was.

I believe Keller is the only public course in America that has held a major (the PGA two times).
