Tip splinter on graphite iron shaft - is it done for?

Hi All,

 

I recently picked up a used set of graphite iron shafts and all but one of the shafts are fine.

 

However one has a splinter on the tip as per the attached pictures (sorry for the quality). 
 

Can this still be used?

Could it be used? Yes. Would I recommend it? No. Use it if you have to- but only temporarily.

Cracked and delaminating, it's done for. Toss it.

I wouldn’t bother, if it is already starting to delaminate you’re only looking for trouble by reusing it. I’d toss it rather than trying to reuse it and having it break on the course.

Agreed, and could seriously injure someone when it breaks.

It can be used, however at some point it will break. The question is will that be in 3 balls, 3 months, or 3 years.

It's not useable imho, throw it away.

I'd cut off the damage and use it for a full swing wedge shaft.

We have no idea if it’s a taper tip shaft or a parallel tip shaft.  Or how much it’s been trimmed already.

Given how bad that one looks, post a pic of the others . Despite the delam in the one you’ve shown the cleanup of the tip looks suspect.  What type of shafts are they, brand , model, taper tip?

@Mr Titleist have you contacted the seller about the condition of this shaft?

That shaft looks like it was WAY over prepped at the top.  The diameter by the paint is smaller than at the tip.  It shouldn’t be this way.  If the whole set is prepped this way I wouldn’t use them at all.

Looks pretty bad. I had a MMT wedge shaft do something similar, not nearly as far down the shaft. I tip trimmed it 1/2" to get past the bad part, and have it in a gap wedge right now as a free experiment, otherwise it was a proverbial tomato stake.

The problem with the splintering  or delaminating is that there is no stopping.  As the shaft flexes it will promote more of the same. 

That said one could argue that if it is epoxied and placed into the hosel  how would it flex? Good point.

good answer. 

 

If you were doing this for someone or as a business then the answer is clear.  NO.  if you are doing it as a personal project Id try it but only in my hitting bay.

I'd argue it isn't really a very good point.

 

Damage that results in that type of delamination is almost never limited to just what you can see.  It's impossible to really fully judge how much damage there really is or how the general layer adhesion (and therefore strength) has been compromised throughout the entire tip.

 

Based on that delam (meaning a very bad job pulling the shafts) and the really bad prep job - I personally wouldn't touch any shaft in the set.

I am going to seek a refund on these as the shaft is clearly no good :(

 

Its a shame as it was a set of Grafalloy Blue taper tip iron shafts which you don't see often in the UK.
