Our local public (to which you can buy a yearly membership) had their first Member-Guest tournament this weekend, and in an effort to bolster participation tried a new format.

Saturday: the front nine was played alternate shot and the back nine was a Chapman scramble

Sunday: the front nine was one best score and the back nine was aggregate (both scores count).

It really turned out to be a good tournament. Typically anything involving a alternate shot format is quickly shot down, and while there was some grumbling, I think people actually enjoyed it. The brisk pace was a bonus.

They also had a shoot-out of some type Saturday after the 18( feeling that it would take forever we opted out of this, good call on our part). It's been suggested for next year to replace the shoot-out with nine additional holes of scramble.

Just wanted to share a different idea that seemed to work well and was a lot of fun to play in.

I like this idea. I may bring it up to the golf chairman / professional at my club.

Our Member Guest Tournament is pretty standard (it could be the traditional format everywhere), and gets old after a while, other than the fact that competition changes every year. It's generally 4 or 5 Flights with 6 teams in each. You play every team in your flight once in a 9 Hole Fourball Match (Better Ball Match Play). The catch is every hole matters. So even if you win a match 5&4, the last 4 holes are still important. You get 1 point for every hole win, 1/2 point for every hole halved, and 0 points for a lost hole. You get an additional 1 point for winning the whole match, or a 1/2 a point if the match is halved. So there's 10 total points per match. So going back to the 5&4 example: Team A wins 5&4 and picks up 6 points (5 for holes won, 1 for match win) but loses the remaining 4 holes. Team B wins 1UP on the 9th hole. Team A and Team B both have 6 point totals now. The total points determines the flight winners (Ties are determined by head-to-head match and then by match of cards in said match, which I now hate see below).

Three Day Tournament:

Thursday - 9 Hole Practice Round. Also included is an option Better Ball of Partners (Net) and Skins Competition (Net Birdie or Better).

Friday - Three 9 Hole Matches

Saturday - Two 9 Hole Matches then Flight Winners participate in "Shootout" to determine Overall Champion.

Shootout - Flight Winners participate in Shootout to determine overall champion. It is an Alternate Shot Format with 80% of total team handicap given. Teams choose a player to tee off on first shootout hole, and alternate tee shots from there on out (so it doesn't matter who holes the putt). The team with the highest net score on each hole is eliminated. If two teams are tied for highest net score, a chip off (closest to pin, on green) determines who moves on. Last team standing is overall champion.

I now officially hate the tiebreaker rules. My guest won all of our matches on Friday and had 19 points, with a two point lead on the team we play in our first match on Sat. We're tied with said team going into the 9th Hole. The "so-called" 18 handicap guest on said team thins a shot out of heavy rough from 170 yards. It runs all the way to a back pin and stops about 12 feet away for birdie, and he's stroking on this hole. So we end up losing the match. We win our final match convincingly, and end up in a tie with this team at 30 points. This was the only match we lost. We won 4 out of 5 matches. They only won 3 out of 5, tying two matches. I think a 1 hole playoff would serve much better, but maybe that's just because I lost.

We do a 'Ryder Cup' at the end of the year that is alot similar to the format above. 27 Holes: 9 Alternate Shot Selected Drive, 9 Two-Man Scramble, 9 Fourball Match.

I really like the idea of Extending our Ryder Cup to a full weekend. 27 Holes Saturday, 9 Strict Alternate Shot (person who holes putt, doesnt tee off next hole), 9 Two Man Scramble, 9 Pinehurst (Chapman Scramble). Then 18 on Sunday with two 9 hole fourball matches.

tbarlow11,

Yours is almost identical to how our private course has theirs. Main difference is in the five "races", you can only win a maximum of six points. And in the "derby", it is still played as a a two-man best ball. It takes forever to play, if they changed it to alternate shot it would really cut the time. I'm going to suggest that to our pro. Nothing will happen because it's so popular, but it's a great idea to keep in the back of your mind.

that's a neat format. Any format will not please 100% of the people. Especially those accustomed to winning under the format that was changed.

We went to a 100 yard playoff in our events to break ties. Both teams play from 100 yards - no handicap shots. It doesn't take much more time than a chip-off, and makes for a better conclusion to close matches.
