Dallas - Lakewood cc vs. Royal oaks cc

Wondering if anyone has played both, checked out what they have to offer and if you would choose one over the other. Looking to join one in the near future. Any info is appreciated!

Royal Oaks is more of an old school course. It will force you to play long irons and hit every club in your bag. They are going through renovations, redoing all the greens and redesigning a few holes and it's coming along nicely. Lakewood is a nice course too, but I just don't get the same challenge that RO gives me. The practice facility at Royal Oaks has greatly improved not to mention the renovated clubhouse and locker rooms are great. I'm not a member at either course, but have friends at both places. You can't go wrong at either place for the total club experience, but golf and tennis both shine over Lakewood.

Royal Oaks is like golfing in a bowling alley... super super tight. Lakewood used to be less expensive, though I've heard that may have changed.

Which is closer to your house or office?

Lakewood is undergoing a renovation where they are replacing all tees, redoing the bunkers with nice sand, redoing cart paths. It doesn't have a great range. But Lakewood isn't in a creek bottom subject to flooding (though recent years flood control has helped at RO).

Thanks so far for the information. Both are quite close to home, Lakewood being closer, but Royal Oaks is 5 minutes from my office. Only traffic sensitive routes would be work to lakewood and home to royal oaks. Every trip is within 15 minutes no traffic. Its a dilemma. One has a wait (and probably a pretty long one), one doesn't. Guess it will come down to which feels the best or how much we factor the wait into it!

You might want to ask some of the members at Lakewood about the renovations & assessments. My understanding is that it's been a sticky issue and I would hate to join a club and then walk into an assessment shortly thereafter.

As far as the course, agree with others impressions. Royal Oaks is land locked and done everything that it can, within reason, to stretch the design over the past 5 years. Lakewood's range is really lacking and the course can be very repetitive IMO. The course upgrades should be welcome changes.

your comments seem to repeat what I have been picking up. members of all categories just got hit by a capital fee attached to dues for the next 9 years or so and I have gotten wind that they are looking at another assessment of nearly equal cost, which prices it at higher than majority of clubs.

I see Royal Oaks practice facilities and range being much better than Lakewood and then I have also been told Lakewoods course will lack challenge similar to what you are saying,

Last, I was definitely interested in DAC for golf based on 2 courses and value of membership, but it is not nearly as close to home or work as Royal Oaks or Lakewood.

As a young professional in the Dallas area who is looking to potentially join a club in DFW, would anybody care to provide a range of pricing for any of these clubs? I'm not sure how "sensitive" some may consider this topic, but any idea or ballpark range would be great to have

RO might have increased price to $70K in last board mtg (that was the rumot), but for a little while they were both $60K (Lakewood just increased from $45K to $60K).
