Any Walk on's to a university?

it depends on the university. Some schools don't allow walk ons at all, you'd be best off getting an email address for the coach at whatever school you are looking to walk on to, and then asking what the procedure is. I think most email addresses can be found on the schools athletic site.

 

I know at the University of Washington, it is 4 rounds at the schools home course from the 7000+ tees, and i think you have to shoot even or better to be considered, and then low out of whoever shoots par or better makes it.

most coaches won;t even consider because of the pressure put on them by the school. what i mean is that they cant afford to offer some kid a full scholarship and have a walk on come and take his place.

 

So i would say you would have to be an all-star and shoot under par to walk on.

Actually from people and coaches i have talked you you both are dead wrong. A walk-on player is not taking the place of a player that was given a full ride. All a walk-ob is the players that fill the leftover spots on the team after the scholarship players are there.

This is usually correct. Every now and then a walk-on will be good enough to take a spot on the traveling team (in Division 1), but for the most part walk-ons just fill the other spots. Occasionally a person will try to walk on for a top spot because he or she has no player resume. Again, not common. Hope this helps.

I could give you some information. I walked on at Divison I, North Dakota State University. Yes I know that it is a smaller DI school, but it is still DI. I had to shoot a 148 to make the team in tryouts. So yes it is possible. I came from a town of 800 people and we did not have a high school golf team. I played baseball all five years of my HS career. So I am telling you that it is not impossible. Just play your game and never let anyone tell you are not worth it.

Difficulty obviously depends on the school, but it is possible at most schools - assuming the roster isn't full. The best thing to do would be to contact the coach and him how to go about it. Even top schools will have walk-on tryouts, but obviously it is very difficult to make the team.

 

There aren't any schools that don't take a walk on because of pressure on the coach - this is golf. There aren't generally very many on full scholarships anyway for a walk on to bump since the team is only allowed 4.5 scholarships. You might have 2 at most with full scholarships (a lot of times only 1), and the other 3.5 are divided among the rest of the team.

i dont about youll but I talked to a lot of college coaches in the recruting process and thats what I was told. Walk-ons dont necessarily take or fill in the leftover spots. This late summer or fall a college coach will pretty much know who will be on his team come the next year.

I tried and succeeded it walking on to a D1 school, however less than a month after I began practicing with the team they cut any and all players not on scholarship. That was my freshman year, they never opened up the team to walk ons again. I was told to go to a local JC and if I played well they would consider me.

 

At the time I was upset and actually quit playing for a while.....but looking back, I should have gone to a smaller JC or D2/3 school. Then if I was good enough, transfered.

Yeah, I'm currently going to UNC-CH and thinking about doing it before I graduate just to see if I can do it.

 

My friend tried to walk on and messed up the final round and didn't make it. Far as I know, they do like a

tournament style try out and if you are even or better you get considered (not sure if they get excepted or not).

 

So that is why I was asking.

If any of you are thinking about going D1, I think you should look at your game and the school you are going to. You may get stuck not playing any tournaments in your career, I have seen it done too many times. Division 2 is a great spot to be and a lot of tour guys have come from that level too.
