I played the King and Bear last time I was down in JAX area. I usually play and stay up in Fernandina Beach north of JAX but decided to head down and see the WGHOF. king and Bear is a very good course but a little pricey. I think Slammer and Squire is quite a bit cheaper but nothing special. I have heard that Dye Valley at TPC Sawgrass is pretty good but have never played it.

Personally I think the public access Amelia Island courses are overrated and over-priced but YMMV.

Check out GolfNow or other web-sites for pricing on the above courses - you should be able to get some deals this time of year.

I lived in downtown St. Aug for three years, through the end of 2013. Total blast. Great town, always something going on. Holidays are spectacular with the Nights of Lights.

I'm a little biased because my employer had benefits at TPC Sawgrass (you can probably figure out who the employer was), the Valley Course was my everyday track. And a darned good one. WGV courses are very good, I don't disagree that King and Bear is expensive but the early-morning rates are cheaper than mid-morning, so try to get out early. St. Johns Golf and CC is a better value play but a fine course in its own right.

Where did you end up playing? My buddy and I are going to play a round in either Jax or St. Augestine in Feb. We've played TPC and want to try something different this go around.

Highly recommend North Hampton (an Arnold Palmer signature course) which is a bit north of Jax near to Amelia Island. Very interesting holes..they dont overseed in the winter so conditions will likely be fast. can be played on the cheap. Used to be a real bear to play, but they've removed a lot of bunkers and junk so more user friendly these days altho greens can be lightning in the winter

Very true. Not overseeding makes that course play very hard and fast. It's pretty tricky in normal conditions let alone when it browns out! I still love it though! Hoping to get down a few more times this winter.

OK, so we stayed at the Renaissance at the WGV. We played a round at the King and Bear, St. Johns Golf and Country Club and The Slammer and Squire. We thoroughly enjoyed all three rounds. We were paired with some very nice people all three rounds. The round at the King and Bear was fun, but it was really cold and windy. The courses were comparable except for the greens. The greens at St. Johns were wicked fast, and I stupidly let myself get talked into the blue tees, so it was difficult, but I liked the course over all. The two at the WGV were similar in a lot of ways, but the Slammer and Squire was a bit easier to navigate for me. All three were in really good shape and the facilities were very nice. We played the Slammer with a really great guy from Birmingham Alabama who is a transplant from Scotland. We ended up running into he and his fiance at the hotel bar that night, and plan to keep in touch. All in all, a great trip.

Early in hand photos of the new GT2 models t the truck.  As soon as they show up on the range in player's bags we'll get some better from the top photos and hopefully some comparison photos against the last model.
