Detecting a Fake Superquad

I read somewhere that you could tell a fake superquad by removing the weight screws and shining a light through the port to see if there was an inverted cone on the back of the face.

I tried it, and I have a new problem. What the heck does an inverted cone look like? There is a circular mark, sort of like a raised weld mark, about 1 inch in diameter right in the center of the face. Is this it? For obvious reasons, I don't have a picture. Has anyone cut an R7 open before?

I figured on another way to tell. Essentially, TM couldn't find a way to make a 460 head with 4 weight ports that would keep the headweight to about 200grams.

It was only when they used the fancy- schmancy ultra thin wall thingy that they got the weight down to where they could make a 460 head about 200g.

So, if you get a head, with stock weights (e.g. 1-12-12-1 in the non- TP version) that is 200g or thereabouts, it stands to reason that it's genuine, because, presumably, the guys in China wouldn't be able to do what TM is doing that quickly and to the same specs, right?

I just so happen to have an R7425 head (a little caved in) that is definitely a fake. I got my $$ back from Mastercard for it after running the serial and getting a letter from TM. Anyway, I just weighed it with no weights in it on a food scale and it's 168 grams. Still a gram or 2 of snapped off shaft in the hosel as well.

Interesting. Anyone weighed a Superquad head that was confirmed as legit?

Do you have pics of the innards of your fake 425?

The inverted cone will look similar to the back of an r7 iron - but not as neat.

1. Yes. I bought mine new at the shop and weighed it for shaft length/swingweight when I had removed the shaft. It was reading 208 with 28g's of weight in the head. I dropped down to 19g's in a 45 1/4" shaft and then bumped it back up to a current 23g's, which should put it at about 203 on a 45.25 stick.

2. No but if you guys really want one I have a coping saw handy. :russian_roulette:

The best way to figure out if your club is fake or not. Is always to take it to a club professional. (TM club professional for best result)

Thanks. The local TM shop is not much help. Staffed by 18 year old kids who don't even play golf.

Best they can do is a visual inspection (which I am equally capable of doing). That alone isn't conclusive.

So, assuming you believe the TM hype about ultra thin wall technology, it would mean that fakers would not be able to produce a 460 head with real weights and weight ports and still keep it to a headweight around 208grams

No, actually the fake I have is dead on for weight. 168grams plus the 12's and 2's comes to 196g's. I just called TM and had them run the serial # and emailed them some pics of the head and serial. They verified it was a fake, sent me a letter confirming it and after I gave them all the info on the seller they also sent me a dozen Blackmax's.
