My Rifle 6.0's Frequency at 7.5's! WTH?

A couple of weeks ago I ordered a S58 6-iron with a Rifle 6.0 shaft, at D0 SW. I currently have a set of S58's with a SW of D3. I wanted to compare them. I thought I hit the D0 6 iron better, so I ordered the rest of the irons (5, 7-PW).

 

Well, it ends up that I am REALLY struggling with the 5 iron. It feels terrible, and I am losing everything right. The reason I like the S58's was because I found the long irons so easy to hit, so I was perplexed. I took the 5-iron to Edwin Watts to have the lie angle and loft checked. They all checked out fine, so I was stumped. for $h!ts and giggles I had him check the frequency. Ends up that the 5-iron frequencies at 323 CPM, or around 7.8!!!!! The 7 iron frequencies at 7.5, and the 9 iron 6.8 Is this normal?

 

PS: I sent the 6-iron back to PING to have the face sand-blasted, since the default grooves chew up golf balls. The other irons already have sand-blasted faces, but they forgot to do the 6-iron. I mention this, since I obviously cannot check it's frequency.

A buddy of mine has 6.5 Project X shafts and they play to 7.5. I had a set of Project X 5.5's and they were right on 5.5. I have heard that there were consistency issues with the rifle shafts, but who knows how much truth there is in that.

Remember that the Rifle scale is measured with a 2 1/2" clamp, and not a 5" clamp. The additional clamping length adds nearly 17 cpm to the measurement.

I have TM r7 TP irons with Project X 6.5. They were tested and freq out at 7.3-7.5. What I was told is that only Ping, Mizuno and one other (I forgot who) have a specific Precision person to make the clubs in the custom dept. Rifles need to be measured properly and cut to a specific science to get them right. The argument that was made by this club fitter I met in Pinehurst was that you order a 6.5 rifle and some manufacturers pull them from the 6.5 box in the warehouse and they stick them in. They are 6.5 BUT when you add a grip, ferrule, and clubhead they all add weights and tighten the whole stick. What the good Rifle people do is build a club that ENDS up being a 6.5 because as consumers, that is what we want. I hope that helps.

The Rifle standard for flex uses the following measurements:

 

2 Iron lenth of 39"

SW of D3 with a 52g grip

Hosel length of 2 1/2"

Insertion depth of 1 1/4"

 

Any deviation from these will change the playing flex of your clubs.

 

Since the modern standard iron length is longer than this standard, building with Rifles does require special knowledge if you want to build to a specific Rifle flex.

 

The problem we have today however, is people will hit a "Rifle 5.5" and not know if this is built to 5.0, 5.5 or 6.0 (very hard to build a 5.5 to 6.5 or higher though), so unless you can measure the clubs - building someone a set with "Rifle 5.5" shafts may or may not match the playing flex of another set with 5.5 shafts installed.

 

This is not unique to Rifle shafts by the way, the same thing happens with any steel shaft. The problem with Rifles is they ARE designed to be built to a specific frequency slope, so we measure that slope. Dynamic Golds are not frequency sorted, so though we can build them to a specific slope, they do not have a specific designed slope.

Yep

That's true but I don't remember hearing so many reports of wrong frequency Project Xs. There's multiple threads every week about people getting really strong Project Xs. Was it a regular occurence when they where made by Royal Precsion? :bigwhack:

In most OEM clubs I find the club flex is higher than advertised. the closest is the mizuno product.

 

As Tim posted, there specific deminsional properties that are used to make the correct flex. Then add that the machines that measure the frequency have different clamping lengths that will impact te results.
