TT Black Gold: Swing Weight not uniform

Swing weight is all over the place

I recently reshafted 2004 Taylormade Rac CB TP which had TT DG S300. According to Taylormade specification, the SW is D3. Each shaft had tip weights on them. I softstepped TT Black Gold in stiff flex 4 iron through PW. After reshafting, the SW is D0 to D2 through out the club. I had to put a lot of lead tape in order to bring up the SW to D3. I measured the SW of 3 iron which was not reshafted. Its SW was a little over D3. Is it normal to have the SW not uniform after reshafting?

You said that the 3 iron with DGS300s weighed at D3.

You also stated that when you removed the remaining shafts some had tip pins.

 

These are used during manufacture to gain a constant swingweight throughout the set.

 

They may not be all the same weight, and they are used to remove any inconsistencies in the weights of the club's component parts (grip, shaft, head)

 

If you reshafted without dryfitting and re-installing tip weights (not neccesarily the same weights in the same clubs, as the TT BG's have descending weights) then the swingweights are highly unlikely to be the same.

 

By installing the lead tape you are replacing the weight lost through the different shaft weights, and also taking up the inconsistencies there in the first place that the tip weights offset.

 

Next time, dry fit the components together, including placing the grip on the swingweight scale, then add tip weights to match the clubs to each other. Then glue up. Saves you using lead tape.

I should have done the dryfitting. It was my first reshafting job, and I really enjoyed doing it. I have one question regarding the dryfitting. Do I actually install a grip on the shaft or do some other way?

Use an old grip you have cut off that has the same weight. Slip in on..... and your good to go

Something to keep in mind with the BG is they are a descending weight shaft, meaning they get lighter as they go up the set, the 3 iron shaft is heavier than the 4 iron and so on. This will throw off any swing weighting but is a great help if you are trying to build an MOI matched set.
