Greater New Haven Private Clubs

Been looking for the opportunity to join a private club, just wondering if anyone has any experiences to share with The Farms CC, Wallingford CC and New Haven CC?

I think New Haven was looking for members in recent years. It is a very good course with a great old school locker room. There is a rumor that Kohler is going to buy Wallingford to give it to Choate School.

Yale is my favorite in the area.

New Haven CC is fantastic and they just expanded their practice area which was overdue. The Farms has quite possibly the most diabolical greens I've ever been on with severe back to front slopes and very quick. Haven't played Wallingford.

Don't waste your time with Wallingford. its not a good golf course. layout wise, condition wise.

The Farms is a nice course, good layout, great shape every time I've been there.

NHCC is very nice, used to have the best greens anywhere. They've fallen on harder times lately and are really desperate for new members. Course wasn't in the best shape last time I was there.

Yale is phenominal. Such a great, no frills, old-school track. I can certainly understand why guys don't like this course, it can be tough and people dont like getting beat up by their course. But if you are a better player, it's the best in the immediate area.

another option-Great River in Milford (semi-private)- beautiful course, great layout, always in immaculate condition.

I'm from Wallingford - been a member at WCC for years (until this year) price crept up + assessments. Great course and plays longer than yardage. Put driver away on back 9 until 18th hole. Among best greens in the state year in year out including this season. Better be accurate and longish on front and accurate on back. I have friends who are still members so I play it often. Hard to score here compared to NHCC, Yale or Farms (once you get used to the greens on the last 3 courses). WCC are flat in comparison.

My friends at WCC are also members at NHCC and it's a notch more expensive and looks tidier et al. Some really good holes but some pedestrian as well. IMO overpriced. I'm not one who ever joined anywhere for the CC experience off the course ... that's me.

Played the Farms twice this years and many times in past. Good condition and fun greens. Some good holes but some weak holes turn me off. Way too many doglegs and parallel holes where blowing one into another fairway doesn't hurt you. Not for me.

I've been a member at Yale for 5 years splitting time between WCC but now full-time at Yale. Conditions improving every season and super is restoring course back to 1930 aerial photos a bit at a time - recapturing green surfaces, reshaping bunkers, new teeboxes this year on a few holes. New range will be awesome opening in spring including 3 hole short course for practice, kids etc. Lots of hidden perks (minor) with membership. No assessments, no extra fees, no surprise costs ... no bills actually unless you charge stuff. Laid back friendly people.

Played Great River in spring and again last week. Lovely as always. Greens a little slower and chewed up on edges last week - basically drought conditions so I can understand.

Also a Yale member and love it. Just golf, no frills - only issues is lack of access when Yale golf team takes over the course. New Haven is nice, but not many memorable holes. I don't care for the Farms, too many doglegs, gets to be target golf trying to get tee shots to certain lines and distances. With today's balls and clubs, working the ball around doglegs is best left to the best players.

I'd play them all and choose one where you won't get tired of the course. I can safely say the Yale has never played the same twice.
