Will it change my putting?

I'm thinking of upgrading to a new Scotty Cameron putter but I have a few questions first that I need answered to make my decision. Right now, I have a Newport 2 MidSlant that I've had since 2000.

1. I've recently noticed that the ball tends to skid on longer putts or when I have to hit the ball harder (i.e. putting up a hill, etc). Will changing to another model (like a Studio with an insert) reduce some of the skidding?

2. If I change to a studio model, what effect will the insert have? Does the putter's MOI increase compared to what I have right now?

3. Do the newer models get the ball rolling sooner off the face (i.e. what the Rife putters, etc do)?

4. What other benefits would I get from changing to a newer model?

I know next to nothing about putters in general other than the fact that I've putted with almost every putter imaginable and I always keep coming back to my putter. I like it a lot, I've got a ton of confidence with it, but I'm never really sure if newer putters could give me a little advantage.

Changing to a new Cameron may stop some of the skidding. Though we may not notice it, our swings do change over time. Your putter stroke probably isn't the same as what it was seven years ago when you got that midslant. I've heard many people mention their hands moving a little forward over time. Especially with a midslant, this may be causing you to hit down on the ball ever so slightly. This will definitely cause more skidding.

A regular studio style will feel softer because of the GSS insert. However, I don't think you'll notice much difference in skidding unless you go to the new newport detour line. The MOI on these will be little higher, and they have the insert as well.

Of course, a futura will have higher MOI if you can stand the NASA satelite look.

I'd never get rid of a better that has been good to me as long as your midslant has. I'd focus on the forward press issue a little before you buy anything. If you want another new Cameron, though, I highly recommend the Circa 62's. Soft, beautiful, and now with a durable finish.

I don't think a full putter change is necessary. I'd take the time to get fit, it's the best thing you can do for your putting game. Simple adjustments in loft and lie can have profound effects on contact and initial roll.

My opinion:

 

1. I doubt it.

2. Likely no change in MOI

3. I don't think so.

 

Personally, I think the whole "get the balling rolling sooner with super special grooves" idea is marketing fluff and nothing more. I think a Cameron Newport made in 1995 is every bit as good as a Cameron Studio Style made in 2007 (or Rife, or Taylor Made, or Yes, etc.)

Once you get to the higer end putters I really think it is all about confidence. If you don't feel confident that the putter you are currently playing with is the best out there then you will not be able to make putts. Cofidence is what makes you putt better.
