How do I restore this?

Found this in my closet... it's my old putter from when I was a junior and I want to re-store it.

 

I live in the UK so sending it off to slighter could be difficult. Is it possible to do it myself?

 

Any help you can give would be appreciated. Should I start by "coking" it?

 

If there is a contact in the UK that can help refurb then let me know.

You can't coke that type of finish, just use sandpaper and paintstripper will help somewhat, I have a one that I stripped the finish. You should be able to gun blue yours since the base material is carbon steel

i have a probably dumb question...

 

if i want to refinish a putter that has no paint, and was at one point raw, how do i get the rust spots off?? im thinking i definately dont use sandpaper, but some help here please...

soak it in coke and then use fine grain steel wool, sandpaper can help remove small stratches if desired

Pull the head off the shaft and send it to Slighter for total restoration. Sending just the head to Tom will be no big deal.......

I'm currently doing something similar. I used paint stripper to remove all the paint, sanded it down a bit, then used a rust removing/inhibiting paint:

Looks good so far. Just not really sure how to do the detailing without taking an inordinate amount of time....

Remove the shaft and have the head sand blasted with fine grain sand. Rifle blueing should restore the colour you want to achieve.

Thanks for all of this I'm gonna send it to Slighter I think (just the head) and get a professional to do it.

I just restored a VI i found in a thrift store (7 bucks with a set of Duchess blades, 3 laminated woods and a bag).

 

Started of by draw filing the face flat (amazing how out of true it was) carefully.

 

I then wet sanded the entire head starting with 400, 600 then 800 grit paper (just sit down and focus for a couple of hours and it will be pristine).

 

On the face I wrapped the sandpaper around a file so as to not sand the face at a angle (remember, focus).

 

I then took it to my buffing wheel and spent 20 or so minutes with red rouge buffing compound bringing it to a mirror finish.

 

Back to the bench with 000 steel wool to knock the glare down a little and hide any rust peck and scratches that I couldn''t remove for fear of removing to much material.

 

I debated about blueing the head and decided to leave it in brushed mirror finish. Paint filled the face with fluorescent orange paint and used bright red paint fill on the rest of the face and sole.

 

Only thing I wish I could of done different is the grip. No original grip to be found so I had to put a Lamkin grip on. Pencil shaft is really small so it took several wraps of buildup tape to make the grip size right.

 

I now need to seal the head as it is starting to rust a little on the sole but my VII looks great and puts true. In fact she putts so true that I took my fat lady (17 years putting with the fat lady) out of the bag.

 

Not hard to refinish, just takes time and patience.

Im in the UK. I can bead blast it for you and oil can it if you like. Ive just done one for a friend (a carbon head) and just refinished mine (stainless head)

The carbon heads i have worked on do need oiling an a little more care and attention.
