NEED HELP!! Sky Caddie Touch or Garmin G8

Recommended Posts

Hello everyone I need some input.

I am trying to decide on which one is better the SkyCaddie Touch or the Garmin G8. I did hear a lot of complains on the sky caddie touch when it first came out what filled with issues and since then about 3 months ago they made an update that supposedly fixed those issue. If anyone can comment on how it works after the update now would be great.

A couple reasons I do not care about are the cost, and the fact 1 has subscription fees and 1 does not. This doesnt bother me.

I just want the one that works the best regardless of price or subscription fees.

If you own 1 or the other or have had both please list what you liked and didn't like about them that would be great.

I currently use a laser and my phone app Golf Logix. Which is a great pp, I pay for the extra features so it is just like the hanheld gps, only the screen is better and 5.5" but the down fall is accuracy and most of all reception. Some courses have no reception so i dont get distances or they take too long to close in the the right number due to satellites.

Thanks a lot everyone.

oh also how do you like it paired with your android phone to get text notifications?

The Garmin and Skycaddie both work pretty much equally, maybe different setup on the menus and such, but as far as accuracy and what they are capable of doing, not really any difference.

I'm kind of amazed that given both are pretty equal, why in the world would anyone buy a Skycaddie when you have a subscription fee to pay. If you really like to throw money away, get the Skycaddie, if you don't like throwing money away, buy the Garmin. No real difference other than the long term cost.

Well, I am going to take an opposite position in that you get what you pay for when it comes to the course information available between the two. The Garmin, courses are free. For Skycaddie you pay a subscription that gets courses that have been mapped by walking the course. You will have target and layup yardages (usually helped by course staff that know the course) that you cannot get by using a satellite photo. Playing hilly courses like I do, proper layup yardage is important to know. You also get intelligreen pro showing slopes on the green and pinpoint (where available) that will give you the yardage to the center of the green zone, not just the center of the green.

I'm going to chime in on this topic. I've own 2 skycaddies, 2.5 and currently the SGX. I like both models and SGX has great visual information. Never had a problem with either unit or customer service. My problem may be me, my computers are older and to add/delete courses I have to do it via USB sync. I don't do it much and I realize why. Tiresome and cumbersome. I've decided that I will be making the move to Garmin when (or maybe before then) my subscription runs out. Why do you ask? Ease of use for one, secondly no fees, thirdly I don't have to upgrade my plan if I wish to play out of state. The last item is ridiculous and skycaddie needs to be ashamed of themselves regarding this fee. I do realize that there is a lot of good information with skycaddie but I own a laser rangefinder and really should be aiming middle of the green anyway. Anyone care to buy a SGX. LOL!!!

I have been thinking the same thing as you.

I am a long time Skycaddie users, i have a SGX and love it but battery life is getting shorter and it is almost 5 years old. I love features of both the touch and G8, i did like that they G8 was alittle bigger then the touch. Plus the 50 dollars more, i wish i could see one in action but dont know anyone with a G8.

So as of now i am thinking of sticking with the Touch, and just pay my subscription

I've had more GPS units than I can remember including a few Garmins, Callaway, GolfBuddy, etc. I have owned probably 4-5 SkyCaddies including the SGX and Touch.

I've found the accuracy of SkyCaddy is not found with any other units. Perhaps the closest was the old Callway uPro that used real aerial images that you could calibrate.

I also have a Leupold laser that sometimes I use to compare against the Touch and have generally found it no more than 3 yards different.

The main difference to me is the accuracy of the maps the devices are using. Skycaddie has the most accurate maps you can get. So with money being a non-factor, I would have to suggest the touch.

thanks I am going to get the touch. appreciate it everyone. I want the one that works the best and is most accurate regardless of price. thanks.
