Conditions are not that great right now. Subject to change. DC and surrounding areas still have some snow on the ground and pretty frigid temps. There's a possible storm in the works next week. As a person that lives here, I haven't touched a set of clubs since December.

Course conditions, in my area at least, ranges from muddy to not open.

So, I'd wait till things warm up a bit before coming to this area, but you could chance it.

Somewhat off topic...If you end up going, I might suggest driving down through PA and hitting the Links at Gettysburg or Musket Ridge/MD National on the way down. I don't know if any of them are currently open but they're all fun layouts to keep in mind for a spring/summer stop on the way from Hoboken to DC

Fredericksburg has a bunch of nice courses, and the greens fees and hotel rates are better than closer to DC. It's only 50 miles south.

That Said, I can confirm that the region is waterlogged at the moment. It will take at least a few weeks of nice weather before things dry out enough for an enjoyable round.

Many of the go-to recommendations around this area are cart path only and waterlogged.

I'd call Laurel Hill and Old Hickory to ask them how the course is. In my experience, both of those courses will give you an honest assessment.

I've been out several times in the past 10 days enjoying the above avg temps, but most everything is waterlogged and CPO. greens are slow and not rolled.

Hey guys, debating a trip to the DC area in the next couple weeks. Does anyone have any tips on golf deals / packages / quality courses in the area? Also what kind of conditions do you think I should expect this time of year (within the next month or so)

Obviously late to the game here but would recommend the following:

  • Potomac Shores (Virginia, Jack Nicklaus course 40 minutes from DC)
  • Whiskey Creek (Maryland, roughly 30-40 min from DC)
  • Raspberry Falls (Virginia, roughly 50 min from DC)
  • Blue Mash (Maryland, links style - roughly 30-45 min from DC)

Most courses aerated and punched a few weeks back so conditions are starting to get pretty good...especially with all the rain we've had lately.

How about golf courses in the DC area east of I-95? Many of the suggested courses (and I think I've looked up all of them mentioned) are Northwest of the DC beltway. I'm going to be in Baltimore for business and then heading south down 95 from there, so I have only a short amount of time to play a round. It isn't going to be feasible for me to drive an hour west and then have to double-back, so I'm hoping to find something closer to 95 or the eastern side of 495. Course I've been able to find in that area are:

-University of Maryland Course

-Enterprise Golf Course (Woodmore is right next door, but private)

-Potomac Shores

I know Potomac Shores has been mentioned by a few people, and perhaps that's the one to choose, but I'm looking for places that might be a little closer to Baltimore or in between there and DC if possible.

Laurell Hill is off 95, south of DC, and that was the site of the 2013 Public Links. I'd highly recommend that or Potomac Shores since they are south and not far off the interstate.

Renditions or Lake Presidential. Easy drive from Baltimore down 97 to 301. Renditions is a novelty course (each hole modeled after famous course; amen corner, etc..) on Central Avenue and Lake Presi is a great track right off 301 a little further south. Each course is within minutes to main roads into DC. Central Avenue takes you straight into DC and Route 4 which turns into Penn Ave for Lake Presi. If you have a short amount of time avoid 95 and having to go around the Beltway.

Hello all, I am moving to arlington and looking for golf course suggestions. Anybody have any?

There aren't really any good public courses that are particularly close to Arlington. Fairfax County runs a bunch of courses. Laurel Hill is clearly the best of them and Twin Lakes has 2 18 hole courses. Both are 30 minutes in good traffic. Some of the others are closer in, but are all 9 hole courses, some par 3 and some executive. NOVA Park Authority runs Pohick Creek near Mt Vernon. It's a bit of a weird layout, but is a full 18 holes. East Potomac is in DC. It's 27 holes and usually in decent condition, but is almost always incredibly crowded.

Westfields is nice, and a reasonable distance to the west, but pricey if you don't wait for a deal. There are lots of courses of varying prices and quality out around Leesburg and Fredericksburg, but you're looking at close to an hour drive to get to those.

I play in a couple of leagues. One's a 9 hole after work league that plays at Westfields, and the other is a traveling tournament club that plays all around the area once a month on either Saturday or Sunday. Both are almost done for this year, but I could send you some info next Spring.

DC area has a gem of good golfing choices - as this thread evidences in the public courses. It also is home very quietly to several very good private choices too in the area but tend to be on the expensive side.

What are you looking for?

Could you send me the info for next Spring? I play the usual Laurel Hill / Westfield / 1757 / etc. rotation every weekend and would love to get involved.

I live in Arlington, and however much I love the city, the other posters are right in that it's a bit of a hike to play decent golf. I usually travel about 30 mins to Laurel Hill or Old Hickory. Both are reasonably priced and both are excellent courses (the nod goes to Laurel Hill).

For privates, Army Navy Country Club is right in South Arlington. As of a month or so ago, it's $70K initiation for non-military. Aside from its ideal location, the place is crap. Terrible layout.

Haank - when was the last time you were at ANCC? About 5 years ago, they re-did all 54 holes at both Arlington and Fairfax and built a new clubhouse in Alington. A membership includes the 27 holes in Arlington, 27 holes in Fairfax, two club houses, multiple pools, gyms, tennis courts and no food minimums. Price is relative, but for active duty military, I don't think you can find a better value in the DC area for a country club. I paid $3,000 for initiation and that was spread out over 3 years.

Here is a picture from yesterday of the "terrible layout" with the Washington monument in the background of the 9th green:

For $3,000 I agree you can't beat it...there is nothing in the area that can compete - not munis and not privates. But $3,000 in this area is unheard of for ordinary citizens.

But if it's $70,000 as Hank says for non-military - the course conditions aren't competitive with other private DC area country clubs in that price range.

All, I am looking for decent places to play and practice just on the weekends or maybe after work to hit a couple of golf balls. I drove to potomac shores which was a new Jack Nicklaus design and hit some balls. Minus the outrageous 26 dollar charge to hit unlimited range balls at a driving range that I got eaten alive by the bugs, I would not suggest. Just looking for some place to really get to practice my game on the weekends.

Which area are you interested in? My go to practice places are either Twin Lakes in Clifton or Stonewall in Gainesville. I give the edge to Stonewall in terms of price and the fact that they normally allow you on their grass tee. But since Twin Lakes is only two miles from my house, it's far easier to get to after work.
