Would adding lead tape on the shaft affect the flex?

A few years ago I remember seeing Tiger Woods using a club to which lead tape had been added around the shaft. I assume adding lead tape to the shaft would change the swing weight. Is this a correct assumption? Also, would adding lead tape to the shaft change the flex of the shaft?

I'm trying to figure a way to make a club a little stiffer without actually having to replace the shaft, shorten the shaft, etc. Would adding lead tape on the shaft affect the flex?

In a word, no.

 

I've got some on my 3 wood (butt and tip) to make it a little heavier. And that's all it does. Generally, the swing weight won't change; it just makes the shaft (and the overall weight) heavier, unless you add more or less at the butt or tip (or clubhead)

 

An enormous lump on the tip end would make the club play softer (as does a more practical addition of weight to the head.)

 

You won't be able to make it any stiffer through butt-weighting I'm afraid.

You cannot make a shaft play stiffer without trimming the shaft.

 

Tiger added weight to his shaft to bring the static weight up. He was making the transition from a 120g steel shaft to an 80g graphite shaft and needed to bring the static weight up during his transition period.
