I'd argue most guys need years of tournament experience before their normal round scores consistently match up with their tournament scores. That's why I always used to get a kick out of listening to guys who had stars in their eyes after they shot an o.k. score in a weekend round suddenly think they could take it to the next level in a competitive event.

It's also true that most of these guys who suddenly "balloon up" under pressure have absolutely no fallback game. They lose all facets of their game and never learned the ability to grind it out under pressure. They might get off to a bad start and it snowballs from there. Alot of guys who played competitively, either in high school, college, professionally, whatever it might be, learn to grind it out under almost all conditions.

If you notice, alot of professional athletes from other sports fall into this category as well. How many times, for instance, was Michael Jordan invited to play in some prestigious amateur event (sporting an alleged 1-2 handicap) and failed to break 80 by a long shot. Just goes to show how difficult the transition can be in tournament competition.

Im going to agree with you on this one. I know what your talking about when kids say what they shoot but shoot way higher and I dont think that there lying, its just that tournament play is different from like playing on the weekends. I found this out the hard way this year being my first year of competitive golf. Before the season I was shooting in the high 40s on 9 holes, but on my first match I shot a 61(yikes!) However by the end of the season, my last 5 rounds were all mid 40s.

Yeah, it gets hella annoying! I don't really understand why people do it either. Just like people who sandbag, or cheat, or say that they hit the ball farther than they actually do. It just doesnt make sense. Quite frankly, I am REALLY short off the tee...sure I play on the coast so the ball doesnt go as far, but when I REALLY nut one it MIGHT go 250-260. So it cracks me up when people say they average 280 and I hitting mediocre drives all day right next to theirs. (Probably actually only about 230-240 :P) But whatev...cheating and lying about your game is never going to help you...so these people are only hurting themselves!

LMAO oh man I've got the best story for this today. Tournament this morning, and as we're waiting to tee off, we're talking about our low round at the course we were playing. Mine was a 74 that I shot on 2 occasions, most recently being last saturday (the 23rd I think it was). The one guy, dressed in a t-shirt and gym shorts, claimed to have shot a 73. The other guy, dressed in an untucked golf shirt and cargo shorts, claims to have shot 69, with the other guy as a witness. So I'm thinking cool, I'll have a good group. NOPE. I fired a 73, scrambling from just about everywhere. Mr. "I shot a 69" fired a 96, and Mr. "I shot a 73" withdrew after 15 holes because he was playing like crap (he was on pace to shoot about 110). But like, these guys were the worst. Neither of them even showed signs of being good, they had NO etiquette whatsoever, walking in my line, redoing putts after they hole out, even when I'm still not done putting. It was a gong show. Good thing there was a double par rule, or they both would have shot so much higher. BRUTAL.

I think that it all depends on the transit from weekend or casual play to competitive play. There really is a Huge difference. It happened to me just last week, I'm a +2.2 and two days before a "mercedes sponsored" golf event at a really exclusive (just for members) chip and putt kind of course, i shot a -7 (65). Two days later i got into the tournament and played with the chairman of the tournament who had heard about my round a few days before cause it was the course record, and started shittalking me all the way through, he really put me off, and he marked an 8 on a par 4 on which i shot a par, but what could i say he was the bloody chairman. I just stuck with it and ended up shooting a 74 (with an 8 :p) for a really crappy round. The circumstances in which you are playing really affect a lot. Golf is a game of mind. It can happen!!!
