Calling all Trackman Wizards! Have comparison Iron shaft TM data, need help analyzing!

Recommended Posts

Somewhat of a newbie to clubfitting. I work in the golf industry but in more of a marketing field, not directly instructing. Hopped on our Trackman the other day and was trying to narrow down iron shafts. I just ordered Apex Blacks with C-Taper Lite 110g Stiff shafts, but I can easily swap out in our shop once they get here.

I've always been right on the line between stiff and reg, but have been trying to research a lot about shaft weights, kick points, spin rates, etc. Not too worried about iron distance obviously, but being able to hold the greens is top priority.

Please notice that the C-taper lite in the data is an 8-iron, and the XP95's are 7-irons. (Didn't have the right shafts on the fitting cart, had to borrow a real 8 iron), but they are all the same heads, Apex CF16. (Other shafts in the bag are Rogue I/O 60 S, Fuji Speeder 865S hybrids)

Any comments, suggestions, observations would be greatly appreciated! Thanks in advance!

What are you looking for as far as comments? If you are looking at irons and greens...LA, apex, spin, and descent angle are areas of focus. Launch looks fine, spin looks low, therefor the descent angle is a bit low depending on conditions. Possibly range balls or lower quality two piece used?

Absolutely could be ball issues, I was using range balls.

Was mainly looking for which were the best #'s between the shafts? I've been fit for Reg and Stiff in the past, as my clubhead speed is 80-82 I think I'm right on the edge. That's why I did samples of the XP95 Reg, XP95 Stiff, and C-taper lite.

For the majority, weight is going to be a much bigger factor. Tune the flex from feel. If it feels good, then it's right. Depending on your sensitivity, you could fit into one flex very well or you might be fine playing a few different options. There's not a lot of variance in your numbers, and not necessarily surprising.

Get the right static length to start

Get a target weight

Sort flex while staying in the weight range that works best for you

If you are too low or too high in launch/spin, that's where adjusting the lofts on the golf club comes in. Leave the shafts out of it.

Use good quality balls to dial in LM numbers ;)

I'm certainly no Pro, but it's tough to judge when you are using 2 different irons. From looking at the data, I would suggest the C-Taper shafts are a better fit due to your launch angle, landing angle, average height & roll-out. But again, the 8 iron will have a higher value for each of those (minus roll out) usually than a 7 iron anyway, so it's tough to say. Perhaps try the regular C-Taper? Only reason I suggest that is based on the difference in your XP95 Reg/Stiff, you seemed to hit the Reg better.

Thanks so much, that makes sense. When you get a target weight, you should really just be going by feel, not really any certain swing data point?

Yeah, I had to grab the 8 iron off the shelf. When you say regular C-taper, do you mean "regular flex C-Taper Lite 110g", or the "regular C-Taper stiff shaft (130g)" ?

FWIW - I end up fitting at least 10:1 in the C-Taper Lite compared to the XP series. Honestly cant remember the last person who ended up purchasing the XP's after a fitting. The non lite version of the C Taper is pretty stout and would not recommend. I was seeing so many people going to the Lite that I ended up with a set myself and after a few weeks with them could not be happier. Came out of Project X 6.0 (yes this was quite a jump down, which suits this old guy OK). I would definitely give the lites a fair shot at staying in the bag. Good Luck!

Good to know! Yeah I've heard great things. I tried the normal C-tapers and was hitting low stingers every time, felt like swinging 130g telephone poles.

I'm coming out of KBS Tour V110 Stiffs in my old XR Pro's, and the C-Taper lites + Apex CF16 heads felt alot smoother already. The Apex blacks are on backorder for another week or so, but I'll let you know how they work out when they get in! Cheers
