Why is the GolfWRX board SOOO SLOOOOOWWWWW?

It's not my computer or connection - others?

I have an extremely fast computer that runs Solid Modeling CAD software, a lightning fast Cable internet system and have no problems with other sites.
GolfWRX, since the last two updates is just so slow I'm finding myself looking here less and less, though it's the best site for info, pics, and the BST.

Any hints on what is going on - a setting or something I have incorrect? I wouldn't think so because I have no problems with any other sites at all.

What browser are you using? I am ok. There is a poll in general right now because we have heard the same from other members.

I have the phishing filter turned off in hopes it would speed the site up but that didn't help.

It's slow on my home computer too.

I access from home and from work occasionally and it is lightning fast at both places...its gotta be a network issue

The site's speed is normal for me and seems to be fairly quick for a message board. :D

How old is your machine? Older machines, pentium III vintage, seem to be experiencing issues with processing javascript programming. I am currently surfing on a two year old laptop, Pentium M 1.8 off a cellular connection fairly fast. I also surf the site on my cell phone's built in browser at fairly fast speeds too. Have you tried viewing the site from another computer? Maybe stop into a library or the Apple store? I would be curious to see your comparative results. I constantly surf the site from different computers and connection speeds and though there is room for improvement, it should not be that slow.

 

We are looking/planning the next maintenace release that supposedly improves performance but, we are running checks on what the upgrade will break.

Pentium 4 with 3.2ghz, duo core, 2GB of Ram. Other sites are lightening fast so it's not a connection issue.

At bandwidthplace.com I just did a speed test and I'm getting 2.5 megabits per second. That is plenty fast.

For grins, clear your internet cache in IE. If you are being routed through any proxy servers, you may want to see if that could be causing some slowness.

 

Also, something to consider is the network route your ISP may be going through may have issues and youre 'stuck' on that route till your ISP resolves it. (traceroute www.golfwrx.com)

 

But since you mentioned it's occurring both at home and work on the same laptop, I highly suggest it is your laptop. For grins, try using Firefox and see how it reacts to accessing golfwrx.

i too am having problems with the site. both work and home computers. it seems that sometimes its a bit slow to get on the site and sometimes it hangs while browsing, but when in, it is still fast, just little hiccups.

 

both computers i use are p4's, one on dsl and one on t1 line.

I can't recall speed issues lately, but there are times when I can't connect with the site at all, or can't connect with the home page, but if I put /forums after .com, it goes through ok.

The front page is slow and we are looking at ways to speed that up. The forum slowness to that level of severity is newer to me. I know comcast is known for DNS issues that could effect performance. I am wondering if a software or antivirus update was pushed that is effecting some users.

OK, so I'm posting here from OPERA. Golfwrx is nearly unsurfable with IE7... but everything the same but on Opera it is friggin lightening fast... try it.

Yes, the board is slow (relative to other sites) with my high-speed connection and IE7.

 

On a side note, I've also lost my ability to quote, and my reply options are extremely limited (can't do anything except type in a reply...no options like spell checking, adding pictures or hyperlinks, etc.). I lost this ability today at some point.

I am really curious if its security software that maybe causing this. There is slow and then there is slower. Its difficult to compare one site to another because of the programming. I am pulling pages fairly quickly on older machines with a little better than dialup speeds. Also, if you are trying to open the picture threads, then those are 5-10 MBs you are looking at a time. That's going to take time to open but, shouldn't take long on a broadband connection.

That has to be a microsoft update of some kind. Can you try another browser as a comparison?

Speaking of other browsers, I would encourage everyone to try Firefox. I am not a Microsoft hater at all, but Firefox just works better and faster. For those rare pages that are only IE compatible, there is a plug in that changes the tab you are in to the IE engine. Problem solved.

 

If Firefox is banned at your work, consider Firefox Portable, which installs on a USB drive. I.T. has bothered about it yet (4 months). Pretty stealth.

I am glad someone else broght this up. I visit the site from work (only on regularly scheduled breaks of course :D) and it is by far the slowest page I visit. The homepage typically takes about 10 seconds to load. I have always just chalked it up to firewall/proxy issues, but I can't think of another site where I have the same experience.

 

For background info I am on a T1, Pentium M 1.6 running IE7 (sorry, no flexibility due to cranky network admins).

 

Please understand - I am not complaining. I appreciate this site a great deal. Just wanted to offer my experiences (and assistance) if you ever need to do any research.

No worries. We're not all too sensitive about critiques...unless I'm the subject of said critique, in which case I've heard tell that I'm pretty sensitive afterall. :D But I digress...

 

I've in the same boat at work where I have to use IE and can often notice the lag, but fortunately that lag seems to have shrunk HUGELY since the last major board upgrade/change. Like Gx said, front page is still slow, but that's getting worked on, as are most of the issues with working AROUND Explorer. If it helps, do what I do and set your bookmark to the forum index. 10 seconds isn't too much, unless the regularity of your regularly scheduled breaks is high, then it adds up. :cheesy:

I had the same experience as you. The forum absolutely crawls on IE, but it is pretty fast on Opera.

 

So to anyone surfing with IE, try Firefox, try Opera, basically try any browser besides IE.

It's faster on the T1 at work than the DSL at home, but it's still loading slower than most sites. At home I could step out for a cigarette (if I smoked!) :D

I access GolfWRX from my Apple Notebook using the Apple Browser & Firefox and use IE on our desktop gaming computer...no problems with either system. But then I'm in Hawaii and the lower 48 always seems to move at the speed of light :] . BTW, too busy to access from work so I can't provide you an assessment using Government computer systems!

Front page should load much faster now. The forums may speed up for some after the next board upgrade in a few weeks. Its an IE 7 issue that I cannot locate right now. With IE 7, the site is very fast for me.
