I work out but don't do excecises that are specific for golf. What do you do golf specific?

Its not Golf specific, but i do crossfit. check it out at crossfit.com. we have a crossfit gym here and i love it. its way competative. Take it this way, i went from lastyear when i was 14 to hitting 260-70 yard drives to now that im 15 i hit it 300.

Why are you throwing out the word "golf-specific"? What the hell does that mean? That term doesn't reallyhave any meaning. I'm guessing you mean you do weird things like curl dumbells on a swiss ball or something crazy and do those wimpy twenty rep sets with the five pound dumbells, that won't get you anywhere. . Just train "strength-specific". Full body workouts tend to be good for what you want to do, have a balanced program that uses compound movements like bench press, squat, military press, etc. and throw in a couple of isolation exercises in there. Alternate heavy days where you train in the 2-6 rep range with days where you train in the 8-12 rep range, something like that. Throw in some light cardio(don't be afraid to add in some sprinting and some cardio that actually gets you huffing and puffing) and stretch each muscle that you work after every set, you know that whole "strengthen then lengthen" strategy and concentrate on getting stronger!!! i'll be glad to answer any questions you might have.

 

p.s. stay away from doing things where you try to simulate the golf swing like getting a cable pulley, standing to the side in a golf stance, and turning. It looks good on paper, but the problem with that is that your muscle memory will learn that swing instead of your golf swing, you wouldn't want that now would you?

The muscle memory you create by doing an exercise for 10-15 repetitions is very minimal. It's not the memory you're trying to create, it's the power derived from doing those types of movements. Look at the guys on tour and check out the movements they're doing. Vijay swings a medicine ball with his trainer Joey D to be able to transfer the power he has developed into his golf swing.

The most important thing you can do to train for golf is to make sure your workouts are multiplanar. If you are working on machines you're only working in one plane of motion and you're strictly isolating a muscle. Plus there is no challenge in your stability since the machine provides all of that for you. Incorporating some type of rotational exercises are great for golf. Find a NASM certified personal trainer or better yet, a NASM Performance Enhancement Specialist. Those guys truly are the best of the best.
