Back to competition!

Recommended Posts

The last time I I competed in team/singles tournaments was highschool. I have played a lot of golf this year and have really advanced my game making a huge jump this year. After looking for competition I stumbled across BAGS RI. They have a lot of singles tournaments through the season. My first tournament will be Sunday. I am really excited and hope to play well. I am sure it will be a lot of fun. I will leave some words of how it went and what it was like after. If anyone has any stories or anything about tournaments they have done and want to share please feel free and if anyone has any experience with BAGS please share.

You are absolutely right about competition. It's an entire different feel. This past weekend I played a buddy. I went to holes 15 through 18 4 holes back unfortunately. But playing holes 15 and 16 I won both by making par and birdie. Then on 17 it was a par three. I missed the green short right about 25 yards or so to the hole back left. He hits the front of the green and was most likely a par. At that point I was done. Best I could still do would be to tie. Ended up with a 25 yard hole out for birdie! However a tie on the last hole gave him the win. Still ten bucks really amped that match up.

Nice! I don't care if we're playing for a nickel. I still want to beat your brains in.

There's a Bags RI thread in the New England Forum. (Either courses or Partners/Tourneys, can't remember).

Bring some extra cash to cover side bets if you wish to partake ($5 ea), like gross skins, net skins, zeros pool, net sweep. You're playing the field, and for the side bets, those that entered the bets. It can be fun, but if you're a quick player, be prepared... BagsRI generally runs 5+ hour rounds (and why I don't play with the RI group any longer). To me, the slow rounds and grinding took a lot of the fun out of it for me. They usually claim that they're not doing anything different the pros do, but then I had to remind them that the Pros are only 2 people per hole, not 4, so they can afford that extra time that a fourball can't.

You are quite right....and, at most, the Tour plays 3-somes...but, even they can fark it up to 5+ hours.

I can play long, slow rounds, and do well, but I always leave the course with a really bad headache....which isn't fun at all.

Or, I get caught up drinking a lots while I'm waiting....which actually makes me play better, but makes it much harder getting home.

Wish I could be playing now in the same era in which I caddied (which should tell you somewhat how old I am)....a 3 1/2 hour round got you a stern talking to from the greens committee, and this was on a nationally ranked, championship course, with average players, all walking.

Good luck with the tournament....and, most importantly, have fun, and make it enjoyable for everyone in your group as well!
