Shanking and casting

Hi all,

 

Can anyone tell me if there's a relationship between casting the club and shanking? In other words, will a player who casts the club have a greater propensity for shanking (inside-out shank) than one who does not cast? Also, does anyone know of any good anti-casting drills?

Casting lends itself to topped or skulled shots and low hooking shots with little slicing. Shanking is over the top outside - in path or a severe inside - out path resulting in shank, slices, hooks, and all around poor face contact (high, low, toe, heel, fat, thin, ect) Shanks could aslo be a "twitch" that has found its way into your swing action at a key point of your movement.

 

Some possible help

 

Get into a balanced stance feeling that your weight is centered over both feet and not leaning forward or back on your heels and toes.

Once set, Start your back swing all together or hands first whatever makes you feel comfortable, on the way back try and get them as high as possible away from your head while keeping them on your swing plane.

 

You know how they tell us to accelerate through the ball on chips for clean contact, perform the same action but with a full swing, keep a nice tempo to the top, set your lag by keeping the wrists loose and the back of your left hand flat mirroring your club face angle. Start the hips first then POW, accelerate your hands down and through and feel as though your are trying to pull start a "lawn mower" that is just right of your back leg, imagine the "rip cord" in your hands, and act as though you are pulling the cord through the impact area to the target and let the ball get in the way! Don't even think about the ball, move your hips toward the target parallel to your target line like railroad tracks, keep both feet planted until the moment of impact where you want to roll your left foot onto its side trying to feel your swing from beginning to finish, end high facing the target with all your weight on your left leg. It sounds funny and will feel wierd but a few swings will give you a sensation of what it feels like and these images will feed the brain to make the body react by sensory perception.

Great post Boom...I have had some issues with casting lately myself...went home last night and used your visual (which I've used in the past but kind of forgot about it) and made a lot of progress.
