Does it REALLY bother you...

when someone talks in your backswing? When they stand in your sightline. When someone moves while your putting? When a train goes by 50yrds from the green during a putt? My brother and I started a new tradition this last weekend, I got a trophy(silver metal cup on black base with BRAGGIN' RIGHTS engraved on it,)made and he came up from Texas and we played for 3 days and in the end he won 2up. We were talking about "noises" and why people get so freaked out about movement, ambient noises, and focus. We talk throughout our games. We just don't get destracted and we can't understand why others go APESHIT when they should be focusing on their swing. I mean, is your focus really so bad that you can't concentrate about what has to be done and not what someone else is doing? I was an Infantryman for 8 yrs, fought in OP. JUST CAUSE89-90 and OP. DESERT STORM 90-91, so I guess my focus under pressure has been ingrained so deep that I can function and focus on the task at hand. But my brother owns a pool company and is as laid back as anyone I have ever met, and he focuses and gets the job done. It kills me to see a PGA PRO get all pissed when a gallery member farts and throws him off his game. I am not busting balls here but I just don't understand. :drinks:

The group that I normally golf with are all a bunch of talkers and pranksters which means throwing gloves, balls etc in your back swing all the while everyone is carrying on a conversation. I'm so used to it that when it gets quiet of nothing is rolling around on the ground I lose concentration. I guess all I can say to each his/her own. It normally doesn't bother me, but if it does bother others I would never do it. I do have great ability to concentrate.

I guess this is another case of respecting each others wishes.

i actually dont usually have a problem with talking, site line, or cell phones going off... in my opinion its just an excuse for a bad shot unless its a genuine sudden noise like an airhorn out of nowhere

Oh gawd! that reminded me of the Jackass movie :drinks:

I laughed so hard I cried when I saw the airhorn scene and the guy, not missing a beat, turning to aim at the airhorn offenders!

If I make the shot it doesn't bother me a bit. If I miss? well....... :clapping:

Nope. I guess I'm kind of used to it- which is kind of bad a guess. My usual foursome- we're a bunch of talkers, one guy likes to take a trillion practice swings when you're on the tee. On the greens, it's not so bad, you might get someone walking across the green behind the hole or taking practice strokes, but nothing too bad.

As soon as I take my club away, the only things that stop my swing or ruin my concentration is bugs that fly into my face (for some reason they want to commit suicide by flying into my eyes) or if I feel I'm off balance or too inside.

well, i like playing without any distractions or noises, because that is the way my dad taught me to play. He taught me proper actions and ettiq. on the course first. Since i rarley have people talking during my swings or anything i guess it would distract me from my shot. Not putting, because im a focused putter. I dont hear anything when i putt, i only see the line and the hole.if its all quite and then a loud noise erupts when im coming down on a fulll shot then it distracts me, but only then.

I think depending on the situation or group you're playing with the decorum matches it. Personally when I play with my Fathers gang, it's all serious because there's money on the line. With my co-workers, I think a lot of the fun we have golfing is derived from the comments and body noises that are emitted throughout the round! :drinks: It's our time to "decompress" from work and for those four hours on the course, it's not unusual for us to be laughing throughout it!

That kind of stuff bothers me. Actually, it's more like it bothers me when people are lack of etiquette. I can make a stroke while a train is making a constant horn blowing or while birds are singing. That does not bother because they aren't lack of etiquette (of course, any disrupted sounds do bother me,) but people who talk, walk or stand directly behind my swing are! I can't stand slow play either. This is even mentioned in the USGA rule book.

Just like BridgestoneKevin said, I have played and taught to play golf with etiquette. When I have to play golf in a group of people who don't obviously seem like they have been taught with proper etiquette, it gets me somewhat. I even bother me more when I've told them the proper etiquette and they will continue to do whatever they do. I don't know why in the world they have to search for stuff in their pocket (which seems to have a lot of changes in there by the way), pick up or put back clubs, talk, walk or sometimes even pee behind my sightline (at least, I should be thankful that the guy didn't face his stuff toward me). Can't they wait just a bit before doing whatever they want to do?

That some behavior does not bother you does not mean it's not okay if it bothers others.

none of that stuff bothers me if i hit a bad shot its because i didnt put a good swing on it. It wasnt because somebody talked or moved, now this one guy i play with if even a leaf falls from the tree he and he hits a bad shot he starts to blow up, he sometimes looks for things after he hits a bad shot to blame it on. To me its all just a excuse for not being that good. :drinks:

In one of David Feherty's columns he said Payne Stewart had a toy fart noise maker he would use to distract players.

David thought he could "one up" Payne with a real ripper but he let the clutch out a little too quick and messed his drawers. This all happened right before an interview with Tiger. Like any commited journalist, David goes to the interview. Tiger says "you smell something" David says yeah that's me I just s@#$ myself.

:pimp: I laughed my butt off the first time I heard this story and it still kills me! Could be from playing too much of Tiger 2006, but I can just hear Feherty's voices saying he crapped himself! :D

Jovi (another member) and I hold two-way conversations while we're both swinging. It's only because we know it doesn't bother either of us. We clam up on the greens though. We're out there having fun, but when it's tournament time I'm pretty focused and hardly talk to anyone. I don't do it with anyone else though.

My dad regularly plays with someone who I can't stand. You're 20 feet away and scratch your ear. He backs off and looks at you as if you killed his pet dog. If he hits a bad shot looks at you again.
