Best Clubs North of Boston

New to the Boston area and looking for a place North of the city to play some golf for the coming season. I am considering joining a private club but would also consider a season pass to a nicer public course. I live in East Boston so going North of the city is much easier than going south. So far, Meadow Brook and Thomson look like the best options. I am 27 and this would be my first private club membership, so I want to make a good decision. Thanks in advance for any help.

I've played Meadow Brook once before. Nice 9 hole course. Haven't been on Thomson but have considered joining there because of their rates for young adult members up to age 34 which I still qualify for. You still qualify for the lower rate with no initiation until age 35 at Bear Hill in Stoneham but thats all the information I have about them.

Welcome to the area. Having grown up in Maine, I just returned back to the area after 12 years in Virginia. Playing out of Abenaqui Country Club in Rye Beach, NH right now and love it. I'm not overly familiar with many tracks close to Boston, but Renaissance in Haverhill is a fun course with awesome amenities and practice facility. Ipswich Country Club is a nice RTJ course owned by ClubCorp (for better or for worse), but that comes with great travel and reciprocal benefits. I believe both have programs for young professionals as well.

Thanks for the suggestions! Bear Hill looks like a great option that I had not seen before. Renaissance looks great, just a bit farther than I would like, but thanks for the idea.

Depending on what you can afford, Turner Hill is another great option with a reduced rate for someone your age.

Although I have never been a member at either, I am not a huge fan of Thompson or Bear Hill. Bear Hill has a couple holes (out of the 9) I really don't like. Thompson is a pretty tight course with a ton of condos snug on a lot of the holes. But, as previously mentioned, their junior rates are pretty solid.

Abenaqui is an awesome course, but definitely a hike for you. Have you looked into Granite Links? They have a young adult membership for those under 30. I wish I could provide a few more suggestions, I will keep thinking and reply back if anything comes to mind.
