OB or not.

Recommended Posts

Thanks, OP. Those pics clarify things quite a bit. From those pics it seems that the cart path is more of an access road alongside the golf course to join a couple of sections of the course together. It's a jogging path first and a golf course cart path second. Eastmoreland here in PDX has a similar scenario between #12 and #13. However, in Eastmoreland's case, you clearly drive off the course, onto a public sidewalk and then back onto the course. I can also see them wanting to protect, in some minor way, the walker/joggers on the path.

Suggests to me that the path IS the out of bounds line. So, the same rules apply as if it is a 2 inch wide line. If the ball is touching any part of the line, it's still in. Bad wording on the card, however, it makes sense thinking this way. If the ball is on the cart path, you can play it or you get a cart path drop. The only option to drop is in-bounds, off the cart path.

You've got this incorrect. If the line on the ground defines out of bounds, the line itself is out of bounds (definition of out of bounds). The out of bounds starts at the course side of the line and extends vertically upwards and downwards from the inside edge. Only if any part of the ball is touching the course is it in bounds.

TheGeekGolfer is following the rule of soccer - if the ball touches the line, it's still in. But in every other sport I know of, including golf, rogolf is right - you touch the boundary line, you're out.

In tennis the ball that touches the line is in as well.

Also true in baseball, but not football.

And in badminton. And in volleyball. And in ice hockey. And in beach volley. And in baseball. And in rugby.

Gee, Tatertot does not know too many sports... :busted_cop:

Heck I can only think of two sports where the line is OOB. Football and Basketball, I am sure there are more , but I have the feeling more sports the line is in then out.

Also why do they call it a foul pole in baseball ? It is in fair territory

OT: Is there any other sport than basketball played with a ball or a similar object where the object is not allowed to be played from outside the court/course? In basketball player may not touch the ball and the line or outside the line at the same time.

Ultimate frisbee maybe..? Don't know the exact rules of that although I have played it (some decades ago...).
