Anyone gone to Oversized grips to reduce going left?

Hi,

I have heard and read a number of times people suggesting that by using oversize grips / wraps etc can help prevent / reduce hitting draws / hooks?

Has anyone specifically tried this for this reason and did it work for you?

I play Winn Excel RF Mids (W6) on my irons and Winn Excel RF (W5) on my Driver, 3W, 3H & 4H. I don't wear a glove, which is why I favor the Winn Excel and I have found that if I use the Midsize W6 on my Woods then I have a tendency to block to the right. The larger diameter grip definitely quiets your hand action so it can prohibit proper wrist **** and release. Whether this is good or bad for you can only be found out through trial and error. My setup came after hitting alot of balls and going back and forth on the grips...good luck...J

I put a midsize on my hybrid and it just doesn't go as far left now

I did this when I was younger and battled with the lefts. It does help, but I think of it as a band aid and I think there are better ways to solve the issue. JMHO

I tried mid size grips and it was terrible for me. Like stated above, unless you really need them because you have larger hands there are better ways to combat the lefts.

Doesn't work great. I hooked it alot and now i have midsize on my clubs and i block all my shots right. It feels like you can't release the club at all.

I was a decent junior tennis player before I took up golf aged 11. Golf soon took over for me (much to the dismay of my father, who was also a handy tennis player..)

 

I always looked on hitting a golf ball as hitting a forehand ground stroke. As a result, my natural shape was right to left, often excessively so. It made for not much conversation with my predominantly-slicing contemporaries who always ended up on the opposite side of the course when I first started.

 

I'll stop rambling and come to the point.

 

I've used oversized (.580s with 3 tapes) for a while despite not having big hands (I'm a medium glove, and use an interlocking grip) and find it a big help in minimising my natural hook.

 

I've sorted my swing out (to a degree, anyway) which is the main factor in correcting any fault but I still prefer a thicker grip, and recommend it to anyone who has a tendency towards 'handsiness' at least as a start. If nothing else, it will encourage the correct motion through impact.

I went to a medium grip with my 10.5 SQ SuMo2 and SQ 3 and 5 wood. Straightened out all of my shots. But then again I have larger hands than most.

If your hands aren't really big enough for a midsize or thicker grip then one idea is to just build up the tape underneath the right hand part of the grip only. That way, you can still grip the club properly in your left hand (for right handed golfers). It's actually quite a popular tour.

Still goes there though. Not a fix-all.

 

Do a search. There was a good thread on who adds wraps and how much and stuff on tour.

There are some crazy ones out there.

Bubba Watson springs to mind...

 

His grips are like cricket bat handles.

 

He uses more under the.... left (had to think hard then) hand a la villa's suggestion. I know Faldo also used a built up lower hand position too at one time. It is very poular if you don't feel comfortable with a lot of grip under the top hand.

 

I read that Bubba Watson does this specifically to reduce his natural tendency to hook, although his hands look to be the size of cow's udders too...

Yep, he uses Ping 703 Gold cord grips with 9 layers of tape in the right hand and 11 in the left hand.

That is huge!

 

Interestingly he has the reminders on his grips set at 5 o'clock (if you imagine the butt end of the club as a clockface).

For him, thats 30 degree to the "strong" hand position. That's a big hook... I tend to grip too strong, maybe I should try 5 o'clock... Never liked ribs though.

Funny thing I read is, with his large hands/grips they use skewers for the rib :drinks:

One of my fellow golfers let me try his club fitted with a Winn grip--don't know which one, but definitely larger than my standard GP. Ball striking was very straight. I can't tell if it's the larger grip OR a feeling of confidence with the larger grip that made me relax my hold on the club. In general, I strike the ball straighter with a more relaxed grip and have less of a tendency to flip or get handsy, with fewer hooks. I wear M Cadet glove, average to slightly larger than average in size.

If you like the feel of winn grips (I can't stand them), then you would need fewer wraps under the bottom hand to produce the same effect because they have less of a taper.

 

If you don't want to build anything up and want to try the extreme - check out the Release grips.

I haven't felt/seen/tried these.....so no input.

 

With more and more tour players going with that crazy big putter grip ("swinging the grip not the head"), I wonder if there isn't something behind a larger grip.

 

My dad loves the mid-size I put on his clubs.

My G-pa loves the oversize I put on his clubs.

 

I'm not sold yet - but curious.

In my case : using midsize grips for all my drivers, fairway woods, hybrids ( I mean full swing mode with thicker grip ) help me feel more comfortable, more powerful and eliminate hook or fade.
