Which wedges to carry???

Recommended Posts

Hello guys-

New to this forum (and golf!) and have researched and appreciate all the help you have offered already! This is my first real season of playing my own ball (not just scrambles), first membership at our local course, and working on completing my bag.

I purchased a set of Calloway XR's- 6-PW, SW. I also carry Driver, 3w, 3h&4h. I saw a deal on Calloway preowned for Mack Daddy Milled Chrome Wedges, so I bought a 52 and 56. Now these things looks SWEET but does it make sense for me being a beginner to have these in by bag? Are these more "advanced" than I should be using- I don't see many "Game Impovement" wedges besides maybe Cleveland RTX CB. Also it still provides a gap between by PW (44 degrees) and the 52 by 8 degrees...does that matter?

So ultimately I guess this is my question- keep the Mack Daddy's I bought, OR get the matching AW to my clubs to complete the irons and ship the MD back?

Thanks in advance!

Tim

If you are truly new to the game, you need to figure out the kind of wedge bounce you need. This is also true for your irons. For now I'd go for the matching AW. Then, in the meantime, borrow a buddy's wedge(s) and see how low bounce and custom grinds work for you.

But if you have to have the Mack Daddys, look up the PGA Value Guide for used clubs and see if the loss margin on trade-in is acceptable for your risk, if they're not working for your ability at the moment.

Thanks for the feedback. I've played a couple seasons worth of scrambles but decided this year I was going to focus on playing more and improving. That being said- based on your feedback and research, I ordered the AW and am sending back the MD3's. Sometimes I get blinded by a good deal! Haha

I think you're making a wise decision. There's a lot to be said for keeping things as similar as possible. Having a matching wedge to go along with your set makes a lot of sense from a consistency perspective, especially when you're first starting out.

I used to have a mis-mosh of wedges and recently got fit for Ping G Irons and subsequently Ping Glide wedges. I'm very happy with my choice to keep my wedges all the same and similar to my irons.

Your most important purchase as a new golfer is...

Lessons from a well reviewed instructor.

Better to learn how to swing the club the right way early, than to develop lasting bad habits. You will enjoy the game some much more!

I paid $170 for 4x 30 minute lessons.

Early lessons typically cover:

-posture

-grip

-alignment

-stance

You would be amazed at how much setup matters for consistancy!

Later lessons will include

-Swing plane

-weight shift

-backswing

-follow through

----

But to answer your question on wedges, borrowing from a buddy is a way to go if that's possible. I had my brother in laws stash to choose from. Settled on 51 Cleveland, 56 & 60 deg vokeys.

8-12 deg of bounce I believe
