7 iron 200 plus yards?

yeah when the pro said they "deloft" the club, it's the way their hands are so far ahead of the ball at impact...

hence they basically can turn a 7 iron into a 5 or even a 4, which gives them the superhuman distance...

Precisely.

And as far as speed of greens, some pros (if they have interchangeable weights) put lighter weights in their putter for slower greens and heavier weights in for quicker greens, but it's all a matter of personal preference. And as far as I know, they don't change the loft of the putter depending on the greens.

Yes many good ballstrikers deloft their irons but that doesn't mean you can turn your 7 iron into a 5 iron, you'd be delofting it 8* and you'd probably wouldn't hit it very high at all.

Also, there are probably only a handful of guys on tour who can hit a 7 iron 200 yards, there just aren't enough guys who swing fast enough to do it.

I read in Golf Digest that the average distance for a three iron on tour is 199 yards... just something to think about. :smilie_ping:

I wouldn't say that Pros are doing anything special to add distance to their shots they are just using their clubs as they were designed to be used. Most amateurs probably try and sweep their irons and also flip their wrists through impact which will add loft to the club. The proper iron strike is a decending blow with the hands slightly ahead of the ball at impact. This is how they are designed to be hit. The only time a Pro will intentionally deloft a club would be to control trajectory, not to gain distance. So, to answer your question, no there is no secret pro delofting technique that will magically allow you to hit a 220 yard 7 iron, but there is something which is called proper impact.

it depends whether your "7-iron" has 32°loft or up to 36° of loft. it doesnt matter how far you can hit your irons its about how close you can hit them.

i see guys hitting 6 irons 200 yards all day long on tour...

and for as high as they hit even their long irons, it's not an issue for them to deloft a club and worry about it not coming out high enough...

most of them guys probably hit their 4 and 5's higher than joe golfer hits his 9 iron...

You improved by 41 strokes in 14 months? very interesting???????????

Hitting a 6 iron 200 yards with a "normal" loft would require roughly someone with 115-117mph of driver swing speed imo and no matter what everyone thinks, the average swing speed on tour IS NOT 115mph.

I play off a 48* wedge and my 6 iron carry is right around 188-192, if i had strong lofted irons i could hit 6 iron 200 no problem. However my driver swing speed is only 112-114 and i'm an excellent ballstriker who isn't adding loft at impact either.

too many people get too held up about how far they hit their irons when in reality most who hit them really long (that don't hit drivers very far) are playing strong lofted clubs (assuming the driver is fit for them).

I think it's Golf Digest that has PGA player's bags at the end of each issue where they also list the carry distance for each club. You'll notice there aren't any that claim to hit their 7-iron 200 yards. For a variety of reasons, distances quoted on TV are usually not what the Tour players usual hit.

BTW, I've heard that Mickelson and Parnevik both play with irons that have strong lofts.

FYI, this is from the What's in the Bag for Camillo Villegas, hardly a short hitter:

Not a fan of Sergio, but I've seen a few rounds where he hits 9 iron at 200 yards. Again, not his normal shot, but it seems when he needed to clear trouble and still get distance he's done it. Interested trajectory when he does it as well. That said, I've hit 7 irons 200 yards, and since I don't carry a 3 and sometimes not a 4, I've been known to hit a 6 iron 200+ yards when need be. Deloft, but still open the face a little and just go for it. Probably could come close with a 7, but again, no need to.

Last week, I played with a friend's cousin, who is a recent college grad. On a 180 yd par 3, he pulled an 8 iron, and knocked it 15 yards past the hole. It wasn't that his ball was low or skulled or anything. In fact, he hit it super high into the air, and it just took a real long time before coming down... we would be looking to see where his ball landed, and unlike our balls, his would stay up there forever.

Don't know... some kids are just talented, and with him being 6'2", I guess it must help with his SS.

Sad to say, he shot the highest score in the group, but still took all our money.

that is a list of their "standard" distances. but pros just have a large range of their distances. tiger is capable of hitting his 8 iron 130 to 200 yards. just a fact.

some people, like yourself, are skeptical, but i've seen long hitting amateurs take a 35 or 36 degree 7 iron and jack it 200 yards. it is pretty cool watching a ball flight like that. very high ball flight that just bores through the air at the same time. difference is though, with a good player, their standard 7 iron is 175 and they occasionally stretch it 200. not so good golfers who happen to be very long try to hit it 200 yards everytime.

I hit my 3 iron about 200 yds. But when I hit my 6 iron, it's 185 yds. Do I loft my 3 iron and deloft my 6? I can't tell which is which.

One would assume your adding loft to your three iron and delofting your six iron, but i can't tell you that without seeing your swing.

most likely you're adding loft to the 3 iron... people tend to help the longer irons, myself included...

These are the good feedback we come to expect from good folks. Thanks! I'd probably check my ball alignment next time (probably 3 iron too forward and 6 iron way back in the stance). My yardage is screwed up at the moment. Cheers!
