courses near train lines...

coming out of Manhattan

Anyone know of some nice, relatively close courses conveniently located near Amtrak or other train lines coming out of new york city? I don't have a car and I've been to the local munis.

pse- check out the new york golfers group on meetup.com we're all a bunch of new yorkers always trying to meet up with each other for rounds, i personally dont know toomany courses convenient off the train but i'm sure some other people can help you-

I know the J/Z comes pretty close to Forest Park G/C. I dont have a car either so its the only course I have played in NY :good: I catch a taxi to it from Kew Gardens for $12

Too funny. I came to this forum about to post this EXACT question! I'm new to NYC and also do not have a car and trying to find a course close to the train stations.

Bethpage is an option, the only trouble is getting a decent tee time. It's a $13.50 roundtrip train from Penn plus another 6$ each way for cab to the course. It's a 5 minute cab ride, you could literally walk if you wanted (plus they charge you $6 per person, not per cab, it's lame). I have played a few times and played Red this weekend. Very nice track but play is slow.

If anyone knows of any other courses, please let us know!

Oh, as a follow up question to this, does anyone know of any courses in the NYC area that have a good practice area? I'm not looking for just a range, I'm really looking for a chipping green and a bunker if possible. A grass range would be a huge plus too.

I think Dyker Beach, near the Verrazano bridge in Brooklyn is fairly close to a train line also... havnt played there, but hear its ok...

Also Marine Park is a short taxi ride off the end of the 5 and 2 in Brooklyn...

I know how to get to all these places, just never brave enough to sit on a train by myself with my clubs :beach: ha ha.

Im from New Zealand, and never quite know how it will go down sitting on a train with Golf clubs??

Didnt realise Bethpage was so close to the train... might have to go for a ride one day :good:

Bethpage is really easy to get to. Just take the LIRR out of Penn (the Ronkonkoma line) to Farmingdale. the stop before that is Bethpage but the clubhouse is closer to the Farmingdale stop. It's about an hour train from Penn.

As for clubs on a train, I have taken them from Penn to 86th on the UWS a bunch of times and rarely does anyone ever blink an eye. I've considered heading out to Pelham bay with my sticks but that's a super long trek on the subway.

dyker beach is probably the best NYC muni but the round times (and some of the people there) are nearly unbearable. i've taken the subway with my clubs there many times but it's almost not worth the time and hassle (1.5hrs from upper east side in rush hour is NOT fun at all).

you can grab some metro north trains from grand central (or 125th st) north to Poughkeepsie (hudson line) and play Casperkill Golf Club (old IBM country club, robert trent jones sr design). or you can grab the harlem line up to Wassaic and play Silo Ridge in Amenia.

only caveat with doing this is the 2hr ride each way and the rising cost of metro north tickets ($25-30 round trip).

Putnam National is also an option but isn't relatively close to a train stop (Peekskill maybe).

i would recommend joining Zip Car instead of dealing with trains (and the relatively expensive cab rides of rural NY, NJ, CT): http://www.zipcar.com/

with a Zip Car you would have a TON more options of places to play in Westchester and Putnam counties, NJ (lots of courses to play) and Connecticut.
