Slicing only the driver or off of the tee

Recommended Posts

It is more difficult to square up a driver, and oftentimes a 3 wood, especially from the tee box. For me, it can be swinging too fast, thinking too much, not relaxing, etc. Funny, I warm up on the practice tee and 'nut' everything great, but get me on the 1st tee and the swing changes. I am now trying a steel shafted driver I made with some success.

Have had the same problem with my Joe Average 90-95mph swing. I've chopped two 460cc drivers now to 44" (from the butt end) and added 10g of lead tape under the head. Also shortened my backswing slightly and slowed down the takeaway. Big improvements all round. Then had a fitting session recently with a pro using a flight monitor. He seemed to like my back yard tinkering (probably just being polite...), gave me a few swing tips and adjusted driver to it's 11.5 deg draw setting. Now to work on everything else!

Hitting rather than swinging?

Byron Nelson said your driver swing should be about like your 6-iron swing.

First, grip the club and check to see if the alignment features (lines on victory and other grips, and/or reminder rib) tend to open the club face even minimally from the square position (doesn't take many degrees).

A second "quick fix" is to add 1 swingweight equivalent in lead tape biased towards the toe. Causes a gradual closing of the club face on the downswing.

Thanks for this tip. I added about a 1.25" piece of lead tape to the toe of my pb driver and hit them fairly straight. Also teed the ball up and hovered to hit. Felt good. I'm taking this to the course tomorrow yo see how it works. Will report back.

I have had issues with the driver too. for sometimes i've been slicing it hard. As a result, i went with the ping SFT for a little while until i have figured it out.

This is the way i have troubleshooted my slicing:

1- I had a week right hand grip (im a right hand golfer). fixed the grip by having stronger grip. Left hand palm now facing the sky. ONE PART OF THE FIX

2- My arms during the swing was running faster than my body. As a result, i had much shorter back swing. I my head, i had a full swing because my arms was already high up. However, as i did not have a proper swing, at impact the face was remaining open, hence the slice. Now, make sure the body and the arms are synced. Since i have tried this, I have not had slice. Sometimes i actually hook it due to the strong grib and straight stance. If I stand close, i could get a baby draw, and if I stand open, i can generate some nice fades. These two parts for me works hand in hand like a chain. if i dont do one of them, or forget one part during the game, i do get in trouble.

Hope this help.

Hit it over the short stop's head? That sounds like a potential recipe for a slice (coming over the top and pulling the ball). I would ditch that swing thought.

I would suggest taking a video of your swing and posting it on the instruction forum. We can't tell you why you're slicing exactly without seeing the video.

One tip I will give is to loosen your grip pressure. If you are squeezing it tight that can prevent that club head from squaring/turning over. Loosen those hands and just feel like the club is more flowing freely through the ball. Eventually you have to lose the fear of the slice and you will the more you start hitting it straighter. The fear of the slice tends to then reproduce more slicing.
