Under plane, right shoulder dip

OK, I'm a decent player for an amateur...2-3 handicap for most of the year, won some club championships and compete in state-level amateur tournaments. However, I'm trying really hard this year to take my game to the next level.

 

My major swing fault is a tendency to get under plane and dip my back (right) shoulder, causing fat shots, hooks, or even the dreaded shank. This manifests itself at anytime in the round, but particularly under pressure of course. Less than full swings with a wedge can be particularly vulnerable, but it could be any shot even including a popped up drive (albeit rare).

 

Any thoughts on drills/swing keys/exercises that I might try to beat this fault? Thanks!

Are you sure its your back shoulder and NOT your swing center i.e. top of the sternum (stationary head)

Aren't the 2 connected? Meaning, if the shoulder dips the top of the sternum would also be low and behind the ideal spot? Or am I misunderstanding you?

Hi BigEd

Any of my student's that start to drop the hands inside and dip the right shoulder I have them do these two drills.

Drill 1

Hit balls with a towel under both armpits. this make the lower body and arms/upper body work together.

Hit 100 balls with this drill and then 25 balls with out the towel.

continue to do this over 500 balls and this will elimanate fat/shank shots and you will feel that great connected feeling again. try to do this drill over several days not all at once.

Drill 2

Hit balls with your feet together.

Set up like normal and put your feet together. Start by doing half swings and work your way up to full swings ( always remember that to swing at 80%)

The right shoulder moves downward on plane, the swing center does not necessarily change position becasue of the shoulder turn, the right shoulder is suppose to move down toward the golf ball on plane...thats why i ask

Oh, I see...yes, my center moves down & back...like the old reverse-C. I grew up watching Nicklaus, what can I say.
