Stonebridge Country Club or Canyon Creek (DFW)

I am moving to an area that is equidistant between Canyon Creek Country Club and Stonebridge Country Club. Please offer insight as to the pros/cons of each.

Stonebridge features a Pete Dye design and an Arthur Hills design, the Dye is a beast and the better of the 2. I find Canyon Creek to be mundane, closer to public golf then country club (quality of conditions + design)

Thanks for that insight. For more background, I have a young family that will be utilizing club amenities as well. So any comments on the membership and social culture, tennis, pools, etc are also important to us.

Not a member of either but have played both. My impression is that Stonebridge members are younger. I would also say that the amenities at Stonebridge are quite a bit better than Canyon Creek. And, if it is a part of the consideration, the practice facilities at Stonebridge are much better as well.

I am a former assistant pro at Stonebridge....and got out of the business, like everyone else, not enough money. After that I joined as a member, the Dye is an AWESOME course. To me it is one of the best courses in DFW, it challenges your game and you are a better player. The other course at Stonebridge is overwhelmed with golf memberships, I believe the last time I checked they had over two or three thousand golf memberships. I feel like ClubCorp uses it as a cash cow. The course has been in rough shape, just because there is so much play. They just renovated their gym, but in turn, made the pro shop smaller.

My former boss, at Stonebridge, is now the General Manager at Canyon Creek. They redesigned the inside and even though the practice facilities are slightly smaller, the greens and golf course are always in great shape. The Stonebridge facilities are that great either. Practice green is about the same size, range is about the same, and chipping area at both need some help. This is just my opinion, however, in the end they are both great clubs.

Dye Course is legit. Very few courses in DFW compare and for ClubCorp it is definitely their best course.

Thank you all for the feedback. To expand I'd like to ask a few other questions. What kind of round times can I expect at each of these clubs? What are the practice facilities like? Something I like to do is stop by the course late afternoon after work and just walk a few holes, and maybe hop around the course not necessarily in a 1-18 order. Are these courses receptive to this?

From my time in North TX and at a ClubCorp track, I would say it was always easer to play an afternoon round then a morning. I lived on the course and could easily play a quick 9 after work or play 1-3 at our club (it horse shoed back to the clubhouse) in under 20 minutes late in the day. ClubCorp generally over subscribes their membership, has a fairly high turnover rate and as a result there is a fight for morning times (weekends) leading to packed courses and slower pace of play.

I’m also a former assistant pro turned member at Stonebridge. I really enjoy it out there. Yes, it is crowded especially on weekend mornings but typically during the week you can get around quickly at the ranch. The dye course doesn’t seem to have any issues with slow play as there are far fewer members. Any questions feel free to ask

It's not very hilly. However, there are numerous long walks from green to tee.

I know several guys who walk the Dye on a regular basis. The only two long walks are from 2 to 3 and 4 to 5. The rest of the holes are very close together.

Besides the two you mentioned 5 to 6, 9 to 10, and 10 to 11 are definitely very long walks. And, at most, there are maybe 2 or 3 holes that are less than a 50 yard walk from green to tee.

Plus, if you play the tips, you can add 1 to 2 and 12 to 13.
