SD vacay Single

Hey guys,

Jan 20-Feb 1(maybe 6th). Tried to do as much research as possible on the forums here and hoping for some feed back on what I have planned. Family vacation with the inlaws and trying to golf as much as possible while not alienating myself!

Jan 22 and 23 I can do early rounds probably looking at The Crossings and one other. Balboa? Both as a single.

Jan 25 friend coming into town and we're hopefully playing Maderas early and , aviara(2pm) then the 26th aviara(rack) then heading to farmers for afternoon.

27/28 open maybe squeeze in a round but cheap.

29/30 entered the Torrey Pines lottery as a single. If not where do I play?

31 friend coming back down for a round at TP. North or south?

Background: high handicapper, use to playing solo and somewhat on a budget. Would love to do Rams Hill but a little out of thee way.

I will be shocked if you win the Torrey lottery. I would bank on going elsewhere. La Costa has two very good courses, one more challenging than the other. I would consider that as an option. And if you have an entire day to spare I would recommend taking the Hour or so drive up to Rams Hill in Borrego Springs. It is one of the finest public golf courses in the state perhaps the country. Conditions and service are second to none.

The lottery is impossible to win. You can definitely try as a walk on single - Walking on throughout the year is piece of cake, may not be the case for the day or two right after. You should definitely be able to walk on before you leave though.

Warren_g44 I have a similar 'tentative' golf days schedule. With the 'tentative' being because the course may change

27th - @ Farmers ; golf practice

28th - Pelican Hill Golf Channel Am Tour event or ; Tijeras Creek or elsewhere

29th - Torrey North

30th - Torrey South

31st - Rams Hill or elsewhere (also depends on weather)

Maderas, Aviara and Torrey and you are on a budget?? :haha:

All pretty good courses. Balboa isn't too bad it can be a little hit or miss with the conditions but the greens are usually very good, definitely reasonably priced. Look into Coronado, very good views reasonably priced and I just played it and it was in pretty good shape. The caveat to Coronado is that you can only book a time two days out I believe or pay some ridiculous reservation fee. Other good courses in the area are Barona and Steele Canyon. Take a look at Goat Hill in Oceanside about 30 minutes from San Diego, I haven't played there yet but have heard rave reviews since John Ashworth took it over.

I live in SD and play just about everywhere so if you have any questions feel free to ask away.

BigCat. Haha ya budget is blown but kid on the way so gotta fit these in now! We are booking Aviara special ($405 for both) so my buddy stays at the Hyatt and we can play after 2pm day of check in then early day of departure. Maderas in the morning he checks in seeing for about $120. Torrey is only if I get the lottery but the walk on is def an option I may try that. I've booked at Balboa, and yes was planning on Coronado too. Would you suggest pre booking all my rounds? Will I ever be able to play solo or will I always get grouped up?

ToughPar. Got your message. I'll pm you.

Hoping the wife will find a hike to do near Rams Hill so I can get that in as well. Probably going to extend my stay through Super Bowl weekend so should be able to add a few more rounds.

If you play Balboa either early morning or around noon during the week you could potentially play by yourself. Coronado you have zero chance of getting on by yourself, that course is probably as busy as Torrey Pines. As a single you have a pretty good chance of walking on at Torrey.

Just show up at Balboa and walk on. You will play with people. You'll want local knowledge anyways. Weekdays Balboa is pretty wide open but there are some events on the calendar https://www.sandiego.gov/sites/default/files/balboa_park_jan18_calendar.pdf

You could walk on Coronado as a single too no sweat. Don't bother with reservation fees or calling but do check their calendar too http://golfcoronado.com/calendar.html

  • 2 weeks later...

Even if you don't win the lottery just show up and you'll get on as there are many dropouts. It's a 8am shotgun on the North Monday 1/30 and a 7 and 12:30 shotgun starts on the South Tuesday 1/31.

You are right on that one.

I saw many people get called up because of noshows. All you San Diego area residents are SOOO lucky to have 2 solid courses right in your own backyard - I enjoyed both the North and the South.

Quick add on to this topic - what are the chances of me walking on to either Coronado or Torrey North during the week around 1230pm? I'm in town next week and want to get out on Wed afternoon (as a single). I've played Torrey South and looking for something with good to excellent conditions. Someone mentioned Goat Hill? Looks like a goat track?!? Is La Costa worth it? I'm staying in Sorrento Valley area (driving down from LA Wed early AM).

Slim to none walk on single at twilight 1pm both courses. Could be at least an hour wait so you won't finish 18 starting after 2pm. You run a very high risk of waiting too long for it to be worth playing (especially Torrey prices). There's always a chance a spot opens up of course. Search golfnow and book something close. I see La Costa on there for $68 1:30pm, that's your best bet. Are you driving straight to the course from LA or to Sorrento Valley and then trying to play around 1pm? Sorrento Valley to La Costa could be ~30min drive.

Thanks for the advice and heads up. I’ll be driving straight from LA to golf then to Sorrento Valley. I could be at a course earlier, like 1030ish, but that probably won’t make a difference with the two I mentioned? Any other recommendations? Anything in Oceanside, Carlsbad, etc? Which course is worth playing?

Yeah, if you get there earlier you have a good chance of going out but obviously paying full price. There's always spots open right before twilight rates, as everybody wants the cheaper rate. Torrey might be like $250 then but Coronado is maybe $60/70 for you.

I would skip both and try them for another time. On this trip I would recommend Arrowood in Oceanside, The Crossings at Carlsbad, or La Costa. They're all pretty close off the 5 freeway as you're coming down from LA. Arrowood being the furthest off the 5. All of them are on golfnow. Have fun!

I’ve always wanted to play LaCosta. Which course is the better of the two?

I like Arrowood, underrated course IMO.
