Lightweight driver shafts

Recommended Posts

I am looking for a Mitsubishi Rayon Bassara Wyvern (45 grams) driver shaft in regular flex for my Ping K15 driver. I have not had much luck with finding a Bassara W43 series driver shaft either. I bought a Diamana M+ Green shaft (from a Callaway Epic) but it does not seem to do the trick for me. At 69, my swing speed is getting lower, about 85 now and have found the lightweight driver shafts much better for my "older" swing. I know the Ping K15 is older technology but it has been the most consistent head I have ever used (the Callaway GBB and TM SLDR went further but not as consistent dispersion).

Looking to get another Wyvern shaft or recommendations for other lightweight driver shafts (under 50 grams) that will not break my bank account and match the Bassara Wyvern. I wrote an article on Golfwrx a while ago on my experiences with lightweight driver shafts (http://www.golfwrx.com/forums/topic/955395-lightweight-golf-shafts-for-the-senior-or-slower-swing-speed-golfer/) and, if you can access this, it might be of value to you. Thanks for any recommendations.

Cobra F-Max AirSpeed Offset Driver, 11.5, Cobra senior shaft
Cobra F9 4 and 7 fairway woods with UST Mamiya Helium senior graphite shafts
Cobra F Max Airspeed hybrids 4, 5 and 6 with standard Cobra senior graphite shafts
Cobra T-Rail irons, 7-PW, regular steel shafts
Cleveland CG15 48/8 and 54/8 DSG Wedge with graphite shafts; 60/6 CG15 DSG Lob Wedge
DART putter, 34", Golf Pride Tour Snsr pistol grip

Upon reading your older post I noticed you mentioned the PXV39, but due to it's cost it was an unrealistic option at that time. Unfortunately it's no longer in production, but once in awhile they pop up on eBay at an affordable price. At your SS the 5.5 may be a consideration. I've always been impressed with the stability the shaft offers at 39 grams.

Your original Post was awesome. Thanks for the info.

Have you thought of trying to find a JDM OEM shaft? I bought a couple JDM clubs (3 wood and hybrid) and their "R" feels a whole lot lighter and a bit whippier than what you'd find here. I purchased a 2016 M2 15* in R flex with standard TM216 shaft and it to me seems very whippy and light. I am a few years younger than you (but not many) and pretty beat up, so I swing driver at about 85, and that shaft is almost not enough for me.

You may be able to find a new JDM head/shaft and sell the head, or sometimes the shafts pop up without the heads.

The downside is that you'll probably only find it on a Japanese site. The upside is that Rakuten and some others are not too hard to deal with. My advice is to use a merchant that accepts PayPal, so you can have some protection.

Also, I have enjoyed ACCRA shafts - I think they go pretty light, and some slightly older models show up on the Bay.

Good luck.

As the swing speed goes down, getting an exact match for the stiffness profile becomes less important and just making sure you get the weight right tends to be the primary focus.

I'd go back and revisit the Aldila NV 44 Magnum. 46 gm for both the reg flex and senior flex. Lots on ebay for very reasonable prices (new uncut for ~$80 - and I even saw one new uncut reg flex listed here for just $35). The only question would be which flex might be better for you. With a 95+ driver swing speed, I found the stiff plenty stiff for my tastes (and I even tend to prefer stiffer shafts).
